Football Notebook: Bielema Stresses ?Arkansas Way? Via Twitter

FAYETTEVILLE ? Arkansas begins its first preseason camp under coach Bret Bielema when players report today.

What should the Razorbacks expect? Bielema made his intentions clear, posting a motivational poster called the ?Arkansas Way? on his Twitter page last week.

?We approach success one detail at a time,? the Arkansas poster read. ?Just as every championship is won 1 game at a time, individual games are won 1 play, 1 possession, and 1 quarter at a time. Similarly, practice is won 1 drill at a time and every workout is won with each and every rep; 1 at a time.

?In order to expect championship results, you must first be able to attack any opportunity to improve yourself as if your entire career depends on it. Playing on Sundays does not come without success on Saturdays, and success on Saturdays only comes with victories each and every day of the week.?

The poster was meant as recruiting tool with ?#BeUncommon2014? at the bottom of the four-paragraph message. But it is fitting for the Razorbacks who are beginning preseason practices now, meshing the ?1-0? theme Bielema has used throughout his career with Arkansas? goal of winning a championship.

Bielema has said since arriving he plans to lead the Razorbacks to their first Southeastern Conference title. He said via Twitter the ?Arkansas Way? is ?simply a path. Not hard to figure out but only the disciplined and consistent can follow!?

?That starts by developing fundamentally sound players and molding mentally strong men,? the Arkansas poster read. ?We need men that are willing to work to become the best student athletes they can be. Whether it be in the classroom, in the community, on the practice field, or on gameday, we need men that are willing to win at each and every opportunity they get. 1-0, every time.?

Heat Check

Preseason practice typically means sweltering heat. And with temperatures projected to be in the mid-90s this week, Arkansas defensive line coach Charlie Partridge said he and the rest of the staff ?must be smart.?

He said it?s especially important for the coaches who worked at Wisconsin or other northern schools, where the heat wasn?t typically quite as intense as the south.

?I grew up in Florida, but I?ve been north for 23, 24 years or whatever it is,? Partridge said. ?We have coaches that have come down need to be smart about the heat ourselves. We?ve got to be smart and really rely on our athletic trainers and their true medical knowledge about how to handle things and when to pull back.

?We?ve had long conversations. But when the bullets are flying, we?ve got to remember what we talked about in a calm setting. Let?s make the right decisions.?

Body By Herb

Arkansas players have credited strength coach Ben Herbert for getting them prepared for preseason practice with his offseason program. Some of them have used social media to show exactly what they?re talking about.

Offensive guard Brey Cook and fullback Kiero Small were among the Razorbacks to show off their before-and-after pictures in the past week. Both sets of images show the two players ? who are shirtless ? in January when the winter conditioning began and again last week after completion of the summer program.

Both Cook and Small are noticeably bigger in their after photos.

?Clean eating and hard work #campready,? Small posted on his Twitter page.

Tickets On Sale

Single-game tickets for Arkansas? 2013 home games go on sale this week.

On Monday, all active members of the Razorback Foundation will be able to purchase tickets online at ArkansasRazorbacks.com. Members must log in by using their eTicket account, according to the school.

On Wednesday, all season ticket holders ? in addition to Razorback Foundation members ? will be able to purchase tickets online. Online single-game ticket sales then will be open for anyone beginning Thursday.

Single-game tickets will be available for purchase at the Razorback Ticket Center, online, or by calling 800-982-HOGS on Friday. Tickets for the two Little Rock games (Samford and Mississippi State) also can be purchased at the War Memorial Stadium Ticket Office beginning Friday.

New, free map highlight's Minnesota's literary stars - TwinCities.com

Friends of the St. Paul Public Library Pat Coleman (L) and Alayne Hopkins with their big literary map of Minnesota produced to celebrate the anniversary of the book awards at the History Museum St. Paul Wednesday afternoon July 10, 2013. (Pioneer Press: John Doman)

You're driving through a Minnesota town that has a familiar name.

"Didn't an author live here?" you ask your companion.

Now you can answer that question by using "From Main Street to Your Street: Minnesota Writers on the Map."

This handsome new free literary map was created by the Minnesota Historical Society and Friends of the St. Paul Public Library to celebrate the Minnesota Book Awards' 25th anniversary.

The illustrated, two-sided map features information about 112 authors, including birthplaces, dates of births and deaths and book titles.

"We're seeing a resurgence in maps because of the literary tourism movement," said Patrick Coleman, MHS acquisitions librarian. "I've been a voice crying in the wilderness for

A 1954 version of the literary map. (Pioneer Press: John Doman)

years for a project like this, a map with good content that looks nice."

Coleman's partner on the $25,000 project was Alayne Hopkins, director of Friends' programs and Minnesota Book Awards, which are administered by the Friends.

"This map is a wonderful sample of the literary legacy in this state," Hopkins said. "I love the fact that you can find authors on it from William Joseph Snelling to Kate DiCamillo."

"Minnesota Writers on the Map" is big. It measures 3 feet by 2 feet to mimic a real road map -- and that fits the idea of literary tourism.

Colored in rich greens, browns and cream, the map is dotted with playful caricatures of 51 authors created by St. Paul graphic artist/illustrator Chad Nestor. One side of the map shows the entire state; the other side features a smaller map of authors in the metro area as well as information about all the authors, divided into six regions.

In the Arrowhead, you'll find Helen Hoover. Scoot way to the west, and there are the Treuers -- Anton, David and Robert. Drop down south, and Fred Manfred dwells in the Blue Mounds. Head back east to locate Frances Densmore in Red Wing.

Minnesota's literary lights are on the map, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sinclair Lewis, J.F. Powers,

Minnesota Writers on the Map" is funded by the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund through a designation from the Council of Regional Public Library System Administrators, Explore Minnesota (the state's tourism promotion office) and the Center for the Book.

This week Friends of the St. Paul Public Library will launch a website where the public can download a PDF of the map and find more information about the authors. Go to thefriends.org/litmap. Information about the writers also is available at the Minnesota Historical Society's website at collections.mnhs.org/mnauthors/.

Free copies of the map are available at the second floor Library Lobby and the Front Library desk at the Minnesota History Center, 345 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul. Copies will be available during the Aug. 28 Read & Ride Day Celebration in Carousel Park, hosted by Metropolitan Library Service Agency.

Maud Hart Lovelace and Garrison Keillor.

But less well-known writers are recognized, too. There's Patrick Cudmore, who wrote "The Irish Republic: A Historical Memoir on Ireland and Her Oppressors." There's Walter O'Meara, author of the novel "Minnesota Gothic," and children's author Emma Brock.

"I take it as my personal mission to bring to the forefront forgotten authors," said Coleman, who's renowned for carrying in his head the names and book titles of hundreds of Minnesota writers.

Coleman points out there have been at least three previous Minnesota literary maps, but none as detailed or attractive as "From Main Street to Your Street."

The partnership between the Friends and MHS began with Lori Williamson, MHS acquisitions/outreach coordinator, who heard about the map idea during a meeting of the Book Awards steering committee.

"It seemed like the right time for the Historical Society to team up with the Friends because we had beefed up the biographies of about 35 authors in our files several years ago," said Williamson, who knows there is "huge interest" among the public in learning about authors and their books. She often answers questions about writers when she works the Minnesota History Center's reference desk, and web analytics show author information is one of the Historical Society's most popular library pages.

When Williamson shared the map idea with Coleman, he couldn't have been happier.

"Lori has listened to me whine about a map for years," he said with amusement. "I was happy to help in any way possible."

Coleman began by making a list of authors he thought should be on the map. He came up with 2,300 names. You read that right: 2,300.

"The hardest part of the map project was the number of authors we could have included," he admitted. "It couldn't be too crowded or it would not be visually appealing. I feigned hurt when Alayne let me have only 100."

Coleman says choosing map-worthy authors was partly subjective.

"We looked at the writers' staying power, importance, whether in their time they were thought to be literary giants. For me personally, these are the authors who deserve broader recognition, those you need to read if you want to participate in our culture."

When the authors were selected, Nestor came on board.

"This project sounded like great fun. I'm a bit of a nut for maps in general, and this is map-ish, even though it's not used to find your way around the state," said Nestor, owner of St. Paul-based Nestor Designs.

Nestor has done other large map projects, including the first-ever map of the island of Bali.

For the Minnesota literary map, he used photos to do sketches of the authors. Then he decided to go a step further and add little iconic images that evoke their books.

There's Wanda Gag surrounded by felines ("Millions of Cats"). Birds fly around Louise Erdrich ("The Plague of Doves"). A Thunderbird perches above Jim Northrup ("Walking the Rez Road"). Stars circle politician/poet Eugene McCarthy.

One of the first enthusiastic responses to the map came from Ann Hutton, executive director of Rochester-based Southeastern Libraries Cooperating, which represents libraries in 12 counties.

Hutton distributed 3,000 copies to public and academic libraries and schools, and she says they are a hit.

"The map has enough information to pique interest but it's whimsical enough so you don't feel you are taking 'Intro to Minnesota Literature 101,' although that's exactly what you are doing," Hutton said.

She's seeing people use the map in a variety of ways.

"At one regional library, they put the map on a bulletin board and asked people to stick a pin in a location they've been to," she said. "A couple of book clubs are looking at reading some of the titles by authors who lived in the area, and others are thinking about day trips or even overnight travel to destinations on the map."

Joan Hummel, communications manager for Explore Minnesota, says those travel plans are what the agency hoped for when they partnered with the Friends for the first time.

"The Friends thought there was a tourism angle to the map, and we agreed," Hummel said. "It was a great opportunity to get the word out about the map and literary tourism in general. The time was ripe because Minnesota has so many authors."

Besides a $2,500 grant to the project, Explore Minnesota mentioned the map in its June e-newsletter, which goes to about 400,000 readers.

Hummel says literary tourism is a niche market that isn't new for towns that have figured out a way to capitalize on their homegrown authors. Sauk Centre, for instance, promotes Sinclair Lewis. Tiny Walnut Grove welcomes visitors from as far away as Japan who come to see one of Laura Ingalls Wilder's homes.

But Hummel says books also can have an indirect impact on literary tourism.

"When I read mysteries by William Kent Krueger that are set in northeastern Minnesota, I think of the Ely area and it makes me want to go there," she said. "Overall, I think projects like the literary map add to our reputation as a cultural destination and generate interest in Minnesota. It raises our profile as a literary resource."

Is Welsh football ready to catch up with Gareth Bale?

With Wales international and Tottenham star Gareth Bale on the verge of a world record move, Robert Critchley looks at the state of the Welsh national team - As well as the recent strides made by Swansea City and Cardiff City.

The most talked about transfer of the summer revolves around a Welshman. There are two Welsh sides in the Premier League, and one of these will be competing in the Europa League. Surely, in this Rugby Union dominated country, football is now really taking a foothold.

A closer look at the playing staff of both the Swans and the Bluebirds paints quite a different picture however.

Swansea have Welsh internationals in Neil Taylor, Ben Davies and Ashley Williams and speculation has been linking Williams away from the Liberty Stadium for the entire transfer window.

Other than these three admittedly very competent players, there is precious little else in the squad with a Welsh accent, more Spanish dialect in fact. Jazz Richards has played a handful of games, but was out on loan at Crystal Palace last season, and more than likely will not be at the Liberty for the coming season.

The Cardiff squad paints an even grimmer picture for quality Welsh players Chris Coleman could choose from to represent the national side. Craig Bellamy is the only player who could, and has played for Wales, in the whole first team squad.

The Cardiff squad is dominated by Englishmen, with new signing Steven Caulker taking the total at present to 17!! That is more than most English Premier League sides can boast in their respective squads.

Where is the development of Welsh players and when they are developed, why are Cardiff and Swansea not keeping hold of them, or are they trying to bring them back to their roots now they have the cash available?

A quick look through the last squad which Coleman picked, and it is clear to see that the depth is still not there, and there is still only a handful of players anywhere near the peak of the game.

This has to be in the thinking of Bale. He, like Ryan Giggs did, knows it is unlikely he will be representing Wales at the biggest tournaments, and his club football needs to be at the highest level. Giggs had that for his entire career, but Bale has only seen brief glimpses. It was the Champions League game against Inter Milan which really put his name on the map, and now he must be craving that all the time.

For Coleman, he will pick Bale, as long as he is available to play, and as a proud Welshman, he will produce his best performances. But Wales will continue to struggle unless more players start coming through and Cardiff and Swansea in particular start producing more Welsh players of international standard.

The derby between the two sides, as a Premiership match will be a fantastic occasion, and something that more than three or four Welshmen should be involved in.

The likes of Joe Ledley, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen and maybe Williams if he does leave Swansea, will look on with a tinge of regret to be missing out on such a game. Obviously, they will see the moves that they have made beneficial for their career, and will have played in some equally big games, but the South Wales derby in the Premiership will be extra special.

So where does Welsh football go from here, and the national side in particular? Hopefully having two teams in the top tier will have more people playing, and more Welsh players coming into their respective first team. Having the most expensive player in the world should be a motivation to other young players that it can be done.

At present though, the national team will continue to struggle, and the few genuine stars which do come out of the principality will continue looking for options in England, or the rest of Europe, despite having two clubs riding the crest of a wave right on their doorsteps.

Russian mobile malware makers numerous and highly organized, says security firm

malware

Lookout 1

Lookout

The organizations make setting up a malware-serving website like signing up for an email or online game.

Mobile security software company Lookout was hot on the trail of a set of Russian malware distributors ? and was surprised to find that the biggest groups responsible were as neatly and effectively organized as a small tech business.

Don't get paranoid just yet: Lookout explained to NBC News in an email that this type of fraud isn't nearly as common here: "It appears that they've cut back on targeting [Western] countries because they're having more success in Russia and the Eastern block. In the past we've even seen SMS fraud targeting the U.S. and western Europe," they wrote.

The way it works is this: an unscrupulous or merely curious Android user searches for free games or apps on his or her phone, and follows a resulting link to a legitimate-looking landing page. After agreeing (often without knowing it) to a terms of service, they are served up a malware application that scams money by fraudulently sending premium SMS messages ? special texts used to purchase ringtones or sign up for a service.

Thousands of Twitter accounts and fake websites are set up to lure unwitting users, but when Lookout followed the thread a bit further, they found that many led back to a few surprisingly professional-looking organizations.

Lookout 2

Lookout

An example of a "landing page" users would be sent to (and redirected from).

From their official websites, productivity contests, and easy-to -use tools, at first glance one might guess these malware operators were legitimate software developers or advertisers. And in effect, that's exactly what these malware HQs are: small startups raking in cash thanks to the booming mobile sector. It just happens that the business they make their money through is fraud.

Affiliates sign up for the site as if they were joining a forum or freelance contractor website. A user-friendly, step-by-step process helps them create fake webpages, design and submit malware-toting apps, and makes the latest virus-scan-avoidance software available.

Meanwhile, the malware makers register dozens or hundreds of fake accounts on Twitter and other networks ? out of almost a quarter-million accounts analyzed by Lookout, over 50,000 were puppet accounts linking to malware.

Just 10 of these malware HQ organizations account for 60 percent of the SMS fraud Lookout tracked in Russia. Such scams don't usually affect the U.S. or western Europe, but it's not unheard of.

Twitter shuts down such accounts when it finds them, and malicious apps are removed from Google's Play Store whenever detected, but are these big organizations being raided or shut down now that they've been outed??

"We generally don't comment on ongoing investigations like this one," wrote Lookout. "However, in past investigations that are now closed, we have contacted authorities."

Even so, it's little comfort when the groups out there are so well-organized and well-staffed. Your best bet is to stick to well-known websites and only download apps from stores you trust. The problem may not be going away just yet, but consumers can avoid it ? with a little discretion.

My Windows XP VM is growing like a beanstalk

New to parallels - please be gentle - I do think it's fantastic by the way.

I can see from searching previous posts that this is a common observation - but many responses are dated so I thought it worth asking the question for an up to date answer in light of current software functionality.

I put parallels on my MBA just to run Microsoft Money. As its the only program I need under Windows, I went for Windows XP to (hopefully) minimise resources consumed (disk space, memory etc), and Money runs 100% ok under XP. I installed Parallels and Money and hey ho, all was fantastic. Brilliant performance and consumption of resources hardly noticeable.

But the VM is now growing in size. It started at 6Gb, went to 8, went to 12, went to 14, now its at 16GB. All in three weeks. I let it be and thought it would settle down, but its just growing and growing. Something's wrong! I'm just running this one application.

I checked a couple of things like turning off system restore, and setting the optimisation settings to work in concert with Time Machine. No difference, the VM is just growing and eating up my precious solid state for no good reason that I can see.

Any suggestions please?

Sony Xperia Z, ZL and ZR updated with various fixes and improvements

Sony Xperia ZL

Camera and all-around performance improvements follow quickly behind Android 4.2 update

Sony has started pushing out an update to the Xperia Z, ZL and ZR yesterday that builds on the previous jump to Android 4.2.2 with several fixes and improvements. We have just pulled down the v10.3.1.A.0.244 update on our own Xperia ZL (C6506 model) via the Sony Bridge for Mac application, but the update is supposedly pushing out OTA (over-the-air) as well.

While we don't notice any immediate changes, across all three devices users are reporting various subtle fixes such as a smoother boot animation, more efficient RAM management, improved 3G signal strength and touch response. A couple of camera changes have been made as well, giving access to high resolution images when not using HDR and improving low light performance.

(AP) ? Egypt's state news agency says an African Union delegation has met with deposed President Mohammed Morsi.

MENA said Wednesday that members of the African Union High Panel for Egypt, headed by former Mali president Alpha Oumar Konare, met Morsi for one hour. It did not provide any details.

The visit comes on the heels of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton's talks with Morsi late Monday, which marked the deposed leader's first contact with the outside world since he was detained during Egypt's July 3 military coup. He has been held incommunicado at an undisclosed location since then.

Last week, prosecutors said Morsi is facing accusations of conspiring with the militant Palestinian Hamas group to escape from prison during the 2011 uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Google's Next Project: Bringing You Hyperlocal News - Fast Company

Google is experimenting on the local news front. The idea, according to Quartz, is to add a local news card to its Google Now service, meaning early adopters of Google Glass can be among the first to benefit from it.

Anyone with an Android device (Google Now also works on iPhones via its Search app) will get information that Google thinks will be relevant via Push notifications--meaning you don't have to go to another site to find it, it finds you. But that, of course, depends on the brilliance of Google's algorithm. The service is currently being tested in-house, but Google's vice president of search and assist, Joanna Wright, said this:

?One thing we?re testing right now is a very local hyper-local news card. Which is really useful--it teaches me things about my neighborhood. For example, I found out Miss Mexico came to my son?s school, I saw that [the local] Chipotle was giving out burritos, and someone was stabbed in the park near my house. It?s very, very targeted to you and your interests.?

Although the rainbow of hyperlocal news may have a pot worth an estimated $100 billion, finding the end of the rainbow is not as easy as you think. AOL attempted to do it with Patch, which launched in 2010. Incidentally, AOL's CEO, Tim Armstrong, who used to work at Google, was Patch's founder. Despite heavy investment, the hyperlocal news site has been "limping" towards profitability.

This is not the first time Google has jumped into the local news pool. It attempted to hook up citizen journalism with a local TV news channel back in 2010 with its uReport initiative, which attempted to bring footage from a person's cellphone direct to San Francisco's ABC7 News' YouTube page. But this is arguably a more thought-out version and, using the ever-increasing magic trickery of smartphones plus geolocation, might be the thing that finally monetizes local news.

Al Golden: Let's put an NCAA compliance officer on every campus

Al Golden - SportsCenter - July 30, 2013

Al Golden talks football with ESPN's Sam Ponder. (ESPN / July 30, 2012)

CORAL GABLES ? Al Golden is making the rounds at ESPN on Tuesday starting with a 10:20 a.m. SportsCenter interview.

Sitting down with Sam Ponder ? wife of former FSU quarterback Christian Ponder?? the NCAA was topic No. 1. Golden hit on some of the same points he makes in most interviews on the subject.

When it came to reform, Golden tossed out an idea for a new model.

"The biggest suggestion from me, for the 125 Division I football programs, let's all invest in NCAA infractions and compliance and let's have an officer on every campus," Golden said. "You'll find then that there's a lot of coaches that want to coach life skills, want to teach leadership, want to teach kids what they need to be successful in every facet of their life, that want education, that are teaching it the right way.

"It doesn't mean we're less competitive and that's a part of the fabric of the United States of America, to be competitive. We're trying to teach life skills and learning in every endeavor. And I think they would see our mission and our value and our goals are commiserate with theirs."

When it comes to the case involving former booster Nevin Shapiro charges, Golden told ESPN he didn?t expect a resolution this week. The Committee on Infractions typically takes 6-to-8 weeks to release a decision. That window opened last Friday.

?I think we?ve operated with class and integrity and transparency throughout the whole investigation,? Golden said. ?? We have not taken any shots at the process at all. We?ve trusted and we?ve been partners with it in terms of a joint inquiry.?

The cooperative nature of the investigation, however, ended in January. UM president Donna Shalala took the first of a few public jabs at the NCAA after it admitted flaws in the process tainted evidence.

Golden also took a few friendly shots at Ponder before leaving the 4-minute, 15-second interview.

With a smile on his face, Golden replied to a question about Stephen Morris by first saying "I think you know something about quarterbacks." At the end, he joked about her inadvertently doing a tomahawk chop.

So, back to the topic. Do you agree with Golden's suggestion to have an NCAA cop on every campus? Leave a comment below and start the discussion.

Daylan Evans knew exactly where he was going. He flew up the stairs and took a hard right and abruptly stopped in a cr?me colored empty room with neutral colored carpet and stood there beaming.

?This is my room,? said 9-year-old Evans.

His baby sister, Ava, 4 months, will have her own room, too.

Evans says he?s been thinking about decorating with chalkboard paint. An honor roll student at Auburn City Schools, he enjoys playing baseball and tackle football.

For Daylan?s parents, Lajoye and Demarrick Evans, a new home is something they?ve dreamed about for their children. Today, that dream comes true. The last of the paperwork will be signed at Crawford Melton?s Opelika office, and the Evans will drive away with the keys to their new Auburn home.

As the first local recipients of the Homes for Heroes program in conjunction with Prestige Properties, the family couldn?t be happier.

Realtor Ashley Smith-Durham of Prestige Properties said the Homes for Heroes program was created nationally after so many heroes lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

?This was a way for a group of Realtors to give back to heroes by helping them buy a home,? Smith-Durham said.

Albert Hall Estates (Fulham, London, by moe707)

***AlLERT BE WARNED***

Terribly aggressive, over confident, arrogant and rude staff. ?This agency has reviews all over the place about their lies and cheating.?Julian the agent was aggressive to the point where he threatened to "bomb" my face when I made comments about the condition of the flat we were viewing. Witnessed by 3 other people viewing at the same time I was put through a an ordeal of abuse, sarcasm and humiliation and then finally a face to face confrontation on the street outside where he treated to hit me. most of the encounter with this man has been recorded on video. ?Over confident and clearly on steroids this man is dangerous and had I been alone he would have assaulted me creating a 'my word against yours' scenario. If he is not on steroids from the dark circles under his eyes and suspicious sniff it could be other substances.

After running several background checks it is evident that this company has a dissolved past, they have no money in their account (suspicious) and they only ever get ratings at 5 stars or 1 star where they somehow manage to leave with the last laugh. ?In cases where they have responded to their reviews they have been astonishingly rude and aggressive even in their response.?

Julian is a dangerous man and by his approach it will not be surprising if he turns out to have a criminal conviction. Furthermore he is also registered as a worker in a business 2 doors from Albert Hall Estates in a company called Fine and Country. Furthermore his degrees in both Westminster and Australia universities are questionable as well as his schooling in Budapest Hungary. All of this is terribly suspicious and daunting to say the least when you read the reviews of many innocent people who have lost their deposits to this organisation.

Be warned do not do?business with them!

Snipsnaphappy: Home Improvement Hero: Patio revamp

I like a challenge me. Which is pretty handy considering the challenges life tends to keep throwing at me.? So entering Moneysupermarket's?Home Improvement Hero challenge was right up my street.? The challenge?? "Improve the appearance or functionality of a room of your choice" in my home.? The catch?? You've can only spend ?50 to do it.

The hardest part was deciding which part of my home would get the improvement.? Then the heatwave arrived and hubby got a new BBQ and I realised our patio was...well...a little neglected...

?

Hmmm.? As you can see it was somewhat lacking in...anything at all.? Just a load of old pots, a wonky table and a disused parasol holder (out of a job since a hardy gust of wind dealt with the flimsy parasol that once existed).? A quick scan of eBay revealed that ?50 wasn't going to solve my wonky table problem, though hubby will deal with that once he's finished with all the other jobs in the garden.? But ?50 does go a long way...

Ta da! A far cry from the bleak corner it once was don't you think?? Although unfortunately money cannot change the weather and it was raining by the time I took these "after" shots. Ah well, I feel the bright pink parasol and the pretty candles more than make up for the lack of sun, not to mention the all-important bunting :)

So how does it all add up???This home improvement cost me ?51.54.? And here's the lowdown on where to get all the bits and bobs pictured:

The parasol was ?30 from B&Q, which I think is quite a bargain.? It comes with it's own storage bag in matching pink too so it's easy to store away without it becoming filthy in the shed, or spiders setting up home over winter and falling on your head when you open it up in the spring *shudder*

?

The storm lantern was a particular bargain?from Sainsbury's for just ?6! It was half price in the sale and it's pretty big actually. It's VERY sturdy and very smart.? I am extremely pleased with this as I can pop it on my hearth indoors in the winter months.

?

?

The candle in the storm lantern is a must for all crochet/knit/yarn geeks like me.? It has a cable-knit texture.? It was ?5 from Amazon.? You can get all manner of knit effect candles if you search on Amazon, and plenty of other online shops too.

?

?

?

The jar candle holders were basically free, unless you count the ribbon of course but I had that lying about in my ribbon box.? I tied ribbon and lace around the jars in order to get all rustic and shabby chic, and I think it worked quite well.? I really love the lace one especially.? The crochet one was made by crocheting with crochet thread over a Gu dessert jar.

?

The pattern I used as a base for this was?on Ravelry here?and I modified it to fit a short wide jar and added a little shell border to the top.? (A little tip with these crochet jar covers: I always dab some superglue around the top rim to stick the cover in place and make sure it doesn't slip down.)

The plant is fake (fooled you!) from Ikea, as is the white pot (from Ikea, not fake).? The plant was ?6.50, the pot was ?2.25.? This was a particularly good buy as I can use it inside when I am not brightening up the outside! Plus I can't kill it, which is a great advantage for me with plants.

The bunting was made from Bonus DK yarn, ?1.79 a ball from Hobbycraft.? I made this before for Lillia's meadow party and thought I'd make some more for this project.? I made up the pattern and it's very simple really, I can post a tutorial if enough people are interested, just let me know by leaving a comment.

The seat cushions are B&Q value range, I got them for ?4 on eBay and I'm not sure that B&Q do them anymore, but they do similar ones, or you could just make them I guess with some plain fabric and a bit of wadding. But it's the school holidays and quite honestly I don't have the time or energy to whip up pretty cushions whilst I am running around after two little whirlwinds of energy all day, and working too!

?

?

The blanket was dragged outdoors from the sofa where it has been in constant daily use since Lillia's 4th birthday.?

All in all I am delighted with how it all turned out.? We are having a BBQ in two weeks time for some old university friends and all their kids. In our tiny garden in should be interesting fitting everyone in!? But at least the adults will have somewhere nice to congregate and drink pimms whilst the children trample the geraniums and terrorise next door's dog.? Happy days.

Iran president's inner circle has Western accent

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Just days after Hasan Rouhani's election victory in Iran, his top advisers and allies gathered for a closed-door strategy session at a think tank run by the new president. The group, lugging spread sheets, notes and policy papers, also carried something new into the mix ? an array of degrees from Western universities.

Soon after Rouhani's swearing-in Sunday, he is expected to unveil key members of his government and give more clarity about his behind-the-scenes brain trust. In all likelihood, the core of his team will include figures whose academic pedigrees run through places such as California, Washington and London.

The Western-looking credentials of Rouhani's inner circle are no surprise. Rouhani himself studied in Scotland. What remains unclear, however, is how much they could actually influence Iranian policies and foster potential outreach diplomacy such as direct talks with the U.S. or possible breakthroughs in wider negotiations over Tehran's nuclear program.

"Studying in the West doesn't mean you would make concessions to the West," said Rasool Nafisi, an Iranian affairs analyst at Strayer University in Virginia. "What it does mean is that the level of understanding and ability to pick up nuances are much higher. The next step is seeing how much of that can translate into changes at the top with the ruling clerics, where it really counts."

On many levels, this is the fundamental question as the clock starts on Rouhani's presidency after eight years of the hectoring style of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

There is little doubt that Rouhani will bring a far calmer and more measured approach. That alone may help with efforts to rebuild strained ties with Europe and open new possibilities for deal-making after the expected restart of nuclear talks with world powers.

But Rouhani's Western-educated political entourage is not about to steer Iran in a completely new direction after his election victory last month.

Rouhani, a cleric and former top nuclear negotiator, does not stand against the Islamic system or the firm controls at the top: Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guard. Khamenei has final say in all key matters, including Rouhani's selections for key Cabinet posts such as the foreign and intelligence ministers.

That leaves Rouhani ? effectively the international face of Iran ? with the task of projecting a new image of dialogue rather than diatribes on the world stage. Inside Iran, Rouhani has to adopt the role of salesman: trying to get Khamenei and the ruling clerics to buy into his views that interaction with Washington and its allies could bring dividends such as steps to ease tightening economic sanctions.

Many of those being considered for Cabinet posts share Rouhani's approach, including a former deputy foreign minister, Mahmoud Vaezi, who holds degrees in electrical engineering from California State University, Sacramento and San Jose State University. He began his doctorate in foreign relations at Louisiana State University but finished the degree in Poland.

Vaezi was head of the foreign ministry's European and American affairs section from 1990-97 under reformist President Mohammad Khatami. In recent years, Vaezi has been a senior figure at Rowhani's Center for Strategic Research.

"The potential candidates ... are those who understand international relations and understand the language of the West," said Tehran-based political analyst Behrouz Shojaei. "This shows Rouhani is serious in seeking to ease tensions with the outside world and improve Iran's economy."

Another potential contender for foreign minister is Mohammad Javad Zarif, who did postgraduate studies at San Francisco State University and obtained a doctorate in international law and policy at the University of Denver.

Zarif also raised his profile in the U.S. as a diplomat at Iran's U.N. Mission in New York during a five-year posting that ended in 2007. In one of his last public events, Zarif was a headline speaker at a conference in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on conflict resolution whose participants included the current U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

Meanwhile, Hossein Mousavian, currently a research scholar at Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, is likely to hold a key foreign policy adviser role. Mousavian also graduated from Sacramento State.

Officials with academic roots in the West are nothing new in the Middle East. Many Gulf Arab leaders and top officials studied in Europe or the U.S. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu went to high school outside Philadelphia and returned to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Jordan's King Abdullah II attended boarding schools in England and Massachusetts and then moved on to Britain's royal military academy Sandhurst.

But Iran's elected leadership ? the presidency and top parliamentary posts ? has had far fewer Western-educated figures. In the years after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Western credentials were viewed with suspicion. Ahmadinejad, who studied in Iran, has strongly favored advisers who also have homegrown academic backgrounds.

Rouhani's administration could mark a strong break and include advisers whose connections with the West straddle before and after the Islamic Revolution.

Among them is Rouhani's younger brother, Hossein Fereidoun, who is helping the president-elect put together his Cabinet list.

Fereidoun was a member of the security team when the Islamic Revolution's leaders, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, returned from exile in France in 1979. He later served in Iran's U.N. Mission. Rouhani previously went by the family name Fereidoun, but dropped it in an apparent attempt to hide from authorities before the Islamic Revolution.

The review of potential candidates for economic roles includes Chamber of Commerce president Mohammad Nahavandian, who holds a doctorate in economics from George Washington University, and Mohammad Bagher Nobakht, who holds an economics doctorate from Paisley in Britain, and was spokesman of Rouhani's campaign office.

A possible candidate for the critical oil ministry post is Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh, a former deputy oil minister and president of Iran's state oil company, who has an engineering degree from California State Polytechnic University.

But speculation was growing that Rouhani could look to a former oil minister, Bijan Zanganeh, who was ousted when Ahmadinejad took office in 2005.

Some semiofficial Iranian news agencies, including ISNA, cited sources saying that Rouhani will tap a former defense minister, Mohammed Forouzandeh, as the chief nuclear negotiator. Such a choice would bring a relative novice in international dialogue into a critical role. Rouhani's aides have not commented on the report, and other names such as former foreign minister Ali Akbar Velayati have been raised in the Iranian media.

Other noteworthy possibilities include Ali Jannati as head of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, where the wide-ranging mandate includes oversight of foreign media in Iran. Jannati is considered a moderate, but his father, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, is an ultra hard-line cleric who often leads the nationally broadcast Friday prayers from Tehran University.

Fonfara Slams Nepotism; Eyes Lottery For Summer Jobs Instead

A Hartford state senator said Monday that the hiring of the children of many government officials for summer jobs at state agencies has denied opportunities to urban teenagers and the state should consider creating a lottery system similar to New York City's.

"Too many young people residing in our cities, especially those of African American and Latino backgrounds, lack the family or friend connections that so many from more affluent backgrounds enjoy," Sen. John Fonfara, D-Hartford, said Monday.

He said he had emailed his concerns to fellow Hartford legislators and to Senate President Pro Tempore Donald Williams, D-Brooklyn. Fonfara, who is co-chairman of the legislature's finance committee, said he was responding to disclosures in two recent "Government Watch" columns in The Courant.

A July 14 column reported that three of the state economic development agency's 17 summer jobs went to young relatives of agency officials. One official sat in on the job interview of her own daughter. Although seven of the 17 jobs are in Hartford offices, none of them went to a young person from Hartford.

At the state Department of Transportation, 29 of the 56 summer workers have the same last name as a full-time DOT worker or official.

"I would like to see how the lottery works," said Fonfara. He said he would have a legislative staff member obtain information about the New York program, which is the largest of several around the country, and research the possibility of legislation to adopt a lottery for filling summer jobs on the state payroll.

New York City's Summer Youth Employment Program has used a lottery since the 1990s to ensure fairness in hiring; it filled 35,000 jobs from 135,000 applications with the lottery this year.

This year, the DOT posted its summer jobs on a state website, and the Department of Economic and Community Development recruited a number of candidates at "job fairs" at three colleges, in Danbury, New London and Fairfield. But Fonfara said more effort is needed to inform and attract young people from cities who do not have the same opportunities as many of those who got the jobs.

For example, he questioned why no effort was made to put out the word at Capital Community College in downtown Hartford. "A huge percentage of Hartford kids go to Capital Community College," Fonfara said. "There should be an aggressive effort to inform young people about the opportunity and that they can get an equal shot at it."

"As a legislator representing the poorest city in Connecticut, to learn that not one Hartford youth was hired [at DECD] following a job fair is disappointing on its own, but to learn that over half of the summer hires [at DOT] have the same last names as current employees is even more troubling," he said.

Fonfara said he's not naive about family connections helping people to get jobs. "I get that. It happens everywhere," he said, giving the example of a son who gets an advantage in admission at the college his father went to. "I get all of that. ? But there has to be opportunity to break that [tradition] for those families that didn't have that opportunity and where there isn't that history of success educationally or in the workplace."

As summer jobs go, the ones at issue pay well. At the DECD's "Welcome Centers" on interstate highways, for example, the pay is $12 an hour and $14 an hour ? either $960 or $1,120 every two weeks.

"Such a good summer job ? opens up a world that a lot of my constituents don't experience," Fonfara said. "It's one of those jobs where you meet some people who say, 'Hey, come back next year,' or 'You go to college ? and you can get a job here when you come back.' This is the way it works in the real world. It's connections, and it's relationships, and, for many people, that's how they walk through the door of opportunity."

If an urban youth doesn't have a parent with connections, and "if you live in a neighborhood where the unemployment rate is 30 percent or better, you're just not going to see those opportunities," Fonfara said. "I feel really strongly that at the government level, at least, there ought to be some policy that attempts to reach out to these neighborhoods ? not just in Hartford, but throughout the state."

Why some are optimistic about Israeli-Palestinian peace talks

The widespread turmoil in the Middle East and the desire of leaders on both sides to leave their mark on history could tip the scales in favor of reaching an Israeli-Palestinian agreement.

By Howard LaFranchi,?Staff writer / July 29, 2013

Secretary of State John Kerry stands with former US Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk at the State Department in Washington, Monday, July 29, as he announces that he Indyk will shepherd the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Secretary of State John Kerry has set the stage for the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks he will relaunch with a dinner at his Washington home Monday by noting that success will require ?reasonable compromises on tough, complicated, emotional, and symbolic issues.?

The prospects for compromise by Israeli and Palestinian leaders on issues ranging from borders and security (those are the easier ones) to Jerusalem and the fate of Palestinian refugees have many officials and regional experts giving the renewed talks very long odds of success.

But at the same time, widespread turmoil in the Middle East and the desire of both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to leave their mark on history could confound the skeptics and tip the scales in favor of reaching a peace agreement, others say.

?There are a couple of reasons for optimism here,? says Peter Krause, a Middle East specialist at Boston College who points to leaders? concerns for their legacy and a realization that failure could empower new, more radical leaders, as reasons not to write off Secretary Kerry?s effort.

Speaking at the State Department Monday, Kerry acknowledged that ?going forward? it will be a ?difficult process,? adding, ?If it were easy, it would have happened a long time ago.? The resumed talks are the result of six trips Kerry made to the region and hours spent with both Messrs. Netanyahu and Abbas since taking the secretary of State job in February.

Officials and experts on all sides say the renewed talks simply would not be happening if it weren?t for Kerry?s determination to restart a peace process he calls the ?granddaddy? of American diplomatic efforts.??

After greeting the chief Israeli and Palestinian negotiators ? Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat ? at his home for an iftar dinner Monday, Kerry will host the two sides at the State Department Tuesday, where they are expected to establish the framework for what Kerry anticipates could be nine months of negotiations.

The goal of the negotiations ? and the many compromises Kerry says will be required along the way ? is a final-status settlement of the issues behind the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a Palestinian state living in peace with a secure Israel.??

Arrest made after online threats to UK campaigner

LONDON (AP) ? British police on Sunday arrested a man in connection with online threats made toward a feminist campaigner, a case which has ignited calls for social media platforms to institute stronger protections against verbal abuse.

Caroline Criado-Perez says she has been facing a deluge of abuse ? including threats to rape and kill her ? over Twitter during the past several days. She said the threats started after her campaign to get a woman's picture on a U.K. bank note succeeded and resulted in the Bank of England's announcement last week that author Jane Austen will feature on England's new 10-pound notes.

In Britain, hundreds of people are prosecuted every year for Facebook posts, tweets, texts and emails deemed menacing, indecent, offensive or obscene. But while there have been several cases of online threats directed at sports figures and politicians, the verbal assault against Criado-Perez appears to have ignited an unrivalled response and backlash against Twitter itself.

The graphic and offensive threats come as combatting the scourge of violence against women has taken on a more public sense of urgency worldwide, when tales of gang rapes in India and Brazil circulated around the world. Earlier this year, more than 130 nations agreed on a U.N. blueprint to combat violence against women, "one of the gravest violations of human rights in the world," according to Michelle Bachelet, the head of the U.N. women's agency.

The head of the World Health Organization, Dr. Margaret Chen, too, called violence against women "a global health problem of epidemic proportions" when the first major global review of violence against women came out in June ? a description that Criado-Perez drew on when writing in the New Statesman about the abuse directed against her. She urged Chen to "take a look at Twitter."

Already, Criado-Perez's experience has set off a campaign and petition to press Twitter to take more action to combat online threats.

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper urged Twitter to carry out a full review of its policies on abusive threats and crimes, and a petition urging Twitter to introduce a "button" that would make it easier to report abusive Tweets has garnered 12,000 signatures.

On Sunday, British police arrested a 21-year-old man, who wasn't immediately identified, in relation to Criado-Perez's case.

She posted on Twitter that she was at a police station to make a statement and had many more threats to report ? followed by the hashtag "shouting back."

He works with found printed images from posters and magazines, including his recollections of township life in his imagery.

Nhlengethwa was urban born and raised and therefore relates intimately to township existence, not only in his collages but also in his prints. Nhlengethwha received various prestigious awards throughout his career and has attended workshops in New York, Senegal and Cuba. He has participated in group exhibitions since the early 1980s in Germany, France, the United States and Botswana.?He has held many solo exhibitions at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg, as well as several two-person shows. Solomon?spent four years in America making customised hand-carved furniture and front doors, and experimenting with mould-making and a wide range of casting methods.

In 2006 he opened his studio gallery THE KEYHOLE on Main St in Plettenberg Bay which launched his sculpting career. His more recent work is stylised, abstract and organic where attention is given to contrasting textures and planes and the effect of light on moving surfaces. Erica L?ttich

Erica L?ttich trained as a film editor, and is an acclaimed photographer. She has recently created ?FENCES? at the Site_Specific Ebenezer residency in Plettenberg Bay. This artwork will be installed during the Site_Specific biennale in August. She has made major contributions to the outreach component of Site_Specific. In her own words: ?The ability to collaborate on an artwork only has validity if it challenges the crafter and the viewer, thus the ideas of each project must be sufficiently researched. Through the creative process of making, the artwork becomes defined and the working together of many hands and hearts makes a clear path that can be expressed by each individual and the intentions can then be communicated to the public.?
