There aren't many automakers left that don't offer some form of hybrid in their lineup, but Japanese firm Subaru can count themselves among the "have nots".

Subaru is best-known for its all-wheel drive systems rather than fuel efficiency, but since 2011's hybrid Advanced Tourer Concept, we've known there was something in the works.

Now, sources suggest the first hybrid Subaru could debut soon, potentially at the end of March, during the New York Auto Show.

It still isn't clear what hybrid system Subaru is going to use.

Mild hybrids have been suggested, with a system not dissimilar from that used by Honda in its Integrated Motor Assist setup. The 2011 Subaru Advanced Tourer concept used such a setup, with an electric motor mounted between a 2.0-liter flat-four gasoline engine, and a continuously-variable transmission.

A full hybrid has also been suggested, similar to that used by technology partner Toyota--but a mild hybrid system is looking more likely. This also means the car probably won't feature an electric-only mode--but it should at least help raise Subaru's fuel efficiency ratings.

Autoblog suggests the car could debut as soon as the New York Auto Show, and the model should eventually hit U.S. soil.

Mild hybrid or otherwise, an all-wheel drive Subaru hybrid should at least give those in Snow Belt states an extra option for winter-ready gas-sippers.

Ke$ha's 'Die Young' is the top workout track, says Spotify

According to data gathered by music-streaming service Spotify,?there's an increase in workout-related playlists in early January. No surprise there, of course, but what's particularly interesting are the actual contents of these playlists. Turns out that men work out to hip hop tunes while women work out to dance tracks.

Spotify analyzed over 2.8 million workout-related playlists to discover exactly what we tend to listen to while getting sweaty. Hip hop artists such as Eminem, Kanye West, and Jay-Z made the playlists belonging to male Spotify users while dance tracks by Ke$ha, David Guetta, and Bruno Mars filled up female playlists.

Eminem's "'Till I Collapse." Kanye West's "Clique," Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop," and Swedish House Mafia's "Don't You Worry Child"?topped the guy's workout tunes, and in that order. (PSY's "Gangnam Style," made it into 13th place for the dudes, in case you were wondering.)

Ke$ha's "Die Young" topped the workout tracks of the ladies, followed by will.i.am's "Scream & Shout," Calvin Harris' "Sweet Nothing," and David Guetta's "Titanium." "Gangnam Style" slipped into tenth place on this ranking.

If we look at the playlists belonging to both sexes together, Ke$ha's "Die Young" keeps the top spot. It's followed by will.i.am's "Scream & Shout" and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop." This is how the top ten spots on the combined ranking look:

The most gregarious salespeople are not the most successful

Store managers and psychologists have long believed that outgoing individuals make the best salespeople. Yet research now suggests that extroverts are actually less successful at making sales than people with more moderate social temperaments. Adam Grant, associate professor of management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, gave personality tests to 340 salespeople and compared their extroversion scores to their yearly revenue. Those who scored exactly halfway between the poles of extreme extroversion and extreme introversion?whom Grant calls ?ambiverts??earned 24 percent more than the introverts and, surprisingly, 32 percent more than the extroverts.

Grant?who is a self-described ambivert and a former salesman himself?says he is not sure why such individuals perform better, but it may be that ?they're less likely to get distracted and to talk too much?they find the right balance between talking and listening.? In addition, extroverted salespeople may sometimes be too pushy and turn potential buyers off.

Next, Grant plans to investigate whether successful ambiverts are always socially even-keeled or whether they tend to fluctuate between extroversion and introversion depending on factors such as mood or the temperament of their customers.

We waited for inspections, dealt with last minute appraisals and prayed that the bank didn?t ask for ?just one more piece of paper? before issuing a commitment on the mortgage. There are fewer transactions this time of year. That means that timetables on each component of the home buying process will be friendlier for those involved in transactions over the next 90 days.

ROME (AP) ? Former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi praised Benito Mussolini for "having done good" despite the Fascist dictator's anti-Jewish laws, immediately sparking expressions of outrage as Europe on Sunday held Holocaust remembrances.

Berlusconi also defended Mussolini for allying himself with Hitler, saying he likely reasoned that it would be better to be on the winning side.

The media mogul, whose conservative forces are polling second in voter surveys ahead of next month's election, spoke to reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony in Milan to commemorate the Holocaust.

In 1938, before the outbreak of World War II, Mussolini's regime passed the so-called "racial laws," barring Jews from Italy's universities and many professions, among other bans. When Germany's Nazi regime occupied Italy during the war, thousands from the tiny Italian Jewish community were deported to death camps.

"It is difficult now to put oneself in the shoes of who was making decisions back then," Berlusconi said of Mussolini's support for Hitler. "Certainly the (Italian) government then, fearing that German power would turn into a general victory, preferred to be allied with Hitler's Germany rather than oppose it."

Berlusconi added that "within this alliance came the imposition of the fight against, and extermination of, the Jews. Thus, the racial laws are the worst fault of Mussolini, who, in so many other aspects, did good."

More than 7,000 Jews were deported under Mussolini's regime, and nearly 6,000 of them were killed.

Outrage, along with a demand that Berlusconi be prosecuted for promoting Fascism, quickly followed his words.

Among those voicing condemnation were prominent Jewish figures abroad.

Mussolini "modeled his anti-Jewish laws after the Nazi Nuremberg Laws barring Jews from civil service," Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said in a statement.

"It is the height of revisionism to try to reinstate an Italian dictator who helped legitimize and prop up Hitler as a 'reincarnated good guy,'" said the rabbi, whose organization monitors anti-Semitic incidents worldwide.

Berlusconi's praise of Mussolini constitutes "an insult to the democratic conscience of Italy," said Rosy Bindi, a center-left leader. "Only Berlusconi's political cynicism, combined with the worst historic revisionism, could separate the shame of the racist laws from the Fascist dictatorship."

Italian laws enacted following the country's disastrous experience in the war forbid the defense of Fascism. A candidate for local elections, Gianfranco Mascia, pledged that he and his supporters will present a formal complaint on Monday to Italian prosecutors, seeking to have Berlusconi prosecuted.

Hours later, Berlusconi issued a statement saying he "regretted" that he didn't make clear in his earlier comments that his historical analyses "are always based on condemnation of dictatorships," the Italian news agency LaPresse reported.

He also contended that the political left was trying to exploit his comment about Mussolini for election campaign fodder.

Advocating aggressive nationalism, Mussolini used brutish force and populist appeal evoking ancient Rome's glories to achieve and keep his dictatorial grip on power, starting in the early '20s and lasting well into World War II. His Fascist "blackshirt" loyalists cracked down on dissidents, through beatings and jailings.

He encouraged big families to propagate the Italian population, established a sprawling state economy and erected monumental buildings and statues to evoke ancient Rome. Mussolini sought to impose order on a generally individualistic-minded people, and Italians sometimes note trains ran on time during Fascism.

With dreams of an empire, he sent Italian troops on missions to attack or occupy foreign lands, including Ethiopia and Albania. Eventually, Italian military failures in Africa and in Greece fostered rebellion among Fascist officials, and in 1943 he was placed under arrest by orders of the Italian king. His end came at the vengeful hands of partisan fighters, who shot him and his mistress, and left their bodies to hang in a Milan square in April 1945.

Berlusconi's former government allies have included political heirs to neo-fascist movements admiring Mussolini.

In 2010, he told world leaders at a Paris conference that he had been reading Mussolini's journals, and years earlier Berlusconi had claimed that Mussolini "never killed anyone."

Berlusconi is running in Feb. 24-25 Parliamentary elections and has repeatedly changed his mind on whether he is seeking a fourth term as premier. Monti is also running, but polls put him far behind front-runner Pier Luigi Bersani, a center-left leader who supported Monti's austerity measures to save Italy from the Eurozone debt crisis.

Polls show about one-third of eligible voters are undecided.

Mali: Timbuktu mayor says Islamists burned texts

SEVARE, Mali (AP) ? Fleeing Islamist extremists torched a library containing historic manuscripts in Timbuktu, the mayor said Monday, as French and Malian forces closed in on Mali's fabled desert city.

Ousmane Halle said he heard about the burnings early Monday.

"It's truly alarming that this has happened," he told The Associated Press by telephone from Mali's capital, Bamako, on Monday. "They torched all the important ancient manuscripts. The ancient books of geography and science. It is the history of Timbuktu, of its people."

The mayor said Monday that the radical Islamists had torched his office as well as the Ahmed Baba Institute ? a library rich with historical documents ? in an act of retaliation before they fled late last week.

He said he didn't have further details as communications to the city have been cut off.

Ground forces backed by French paratroopers and helicopters took control of Timbuktu's airport and the roads leading to the town in an overnight operation, a French military official said Monday. It marked the latest success in the two-week-old French mission to oust radical Islamists from the northern half of Mali, which they seized more than nine months ago.

French Col. Thierry Burkhard, the chief military spokesman in Paris, said Monday that the town's airport was taken without firing a shot.

"There was an operation on Timbuktu last night that allowed us to control access to the town," he said Monday. "It's up to Malian forces to retake the town."

The Timbuktu operation comes a day after the French announced they had seized the airport and a key bridge in a city east of Timbuktu, Gao, one of the other northern provincial capitals that had been under the grip of radical Islamists, who had turned it into a virtual replica of Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

The French and Malian forces so far have met little resistance from the Islamists, who seized northern Mali in the wake of a military coup in the distant capital of Bamako, in southern Mali.

Timbuktu, which lies on an ancient caravan route, has entranced travelers for centuries, is some 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) northeast of Bamako. During their rule, the militants have systematically destroyed UNESCO World Heritage sites in Timbuktu.

A spokesman for the al-Qaida-linked militants has said that the ancient tombs of Sufi saints were destroyed because they contravened Islam, encouraging Muslims to venerate saints instead of God.

Among the tombs they destroyed is that of Sidi Mahmoudou, a saint who died in 955, according to the UNESCO website.

Timbuktu, long a hub of Islamic learning, is also home to some 20,000 manuscripts, some dating back as far as the 12th century. Owners have succeeded in removing some of the manuscripts from Timbuktu to save them, while others have been carefully hidden away from the Islamists.

The destructions recall tactics used by the Taliban in 2001 when they dynamited a pair of giant Buddhas carved into a mountain in Bamiyan province. Around the same time, the Taliban also rampaged through the national museum, smashing any art depicting the human form, considered idolatrous under their hardline interpretation of Islam. In all, they destroyed about 2,500 statues.

Pennsylvania man gets drive-thru send-off after funeral

YORK, Pa. (AP) ? Mourners at a Pennsylvania fast-food fan's funeral wanted him to have it his way, so they arranged for his hearse ? and the rest of the procession ? to make one last drive-thru visit before reaching the cemetery.

David Kime Jr. "lived by his own rules," daughter Linda Phiel said. He considered the lettuce on a burger his version of healthy eating, she said.

To give him a whopper of a send-off Saturday, the funeral procession stopped at a Burger King where each mourner got a sandwich for the road.

Kime got one last burger too, the York Daily Record reported. It was placed atop his flag-draped coffin at the cemetery.

Phiel said the display wasn't a joke, rather a happy way of honoring her father and the things that brought him joy.

"He lived a wonderful life and on his own terms," she said.

Kime, 88, a World War II veteran, died Jan. 20.

Restaurant manager Margaret Hess said she knew his face and his order. She and her crew made 40 burgers for the funeral procession.

"It's nice to know he was a loyal customer up until the end ? the very end," she said.

Engineers use evolution to improve solar cell design

Scientists are using principles of natural selection to evolve a more efficient solar cell.

Engineers at Northwestern University wrote a computer program that "mates" design elements and assesses the fitness of their "offspring" to come up with the most efficient possible organic solar cell. Organic solar cells are made with the so-called organic elements ? carbon, oxygen and nitrogen ? and are cheaper to make, lighter and more flexible than the traditional silicon cells available in solar panels today.

Organic cells aren't as efficient at turning the sun's energy into electricity as silicon cells, however. Many research groups are working to improve organic solar cells' efficiency. If they work well, such cells could go into? electricity-producing windows ?or clothes.

In their work, the Northwestern researchers focused on the top layer of an organic solar cell, called the scattering layer, which traps photons from sunlight. They wanted a scattering layer that would hold photos for a greater amount of time.

"We wanted to determine the geometry for the scattering layer that would give us optimal performance," Cheng Sun, a mechanical engineer and one of the creators of the new organic solar cell,? said in a statement. "But with so many possibilities, it's difficult to know where to start, so we looked to laws of natural selection to guide us."

Sun and his colleagues' program simulated more than 20 generations of matings to come up with their final design. The program also mimicked the biological processes of mutation and an exchange of traits called crossing over.

The resulting design traps photons for three times as long as the Yablonovitch Limit, which describes how long a photon is likely to stay in a semiconducting material. Researchers have only been able to reach and break the Yablonovitch Limit in the last few years.?

The engineers? published their work ?Jan. 3 in the journal Scientific Reports.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) ? Just a week ago, things looked dire for Sarah and Tim Long, owners of Timbers Resort in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Snow is their winter lifeblood, drawing outdoor sports enthusiasts from far and wide, yet the ground was bare.

Then came a desperately needed arctic blast. Suddenly the drifts were thigh-deep ? and snowmobilers were flocking to the mom-and-pop operation's cottages on the northern end of Lake Gogebic.

"Right now it's going very good. We're getting tons of snow," Sarah Long said Friday. But after losing nearly three weeks' worth of reservations and enduring a dismal season a year ago, she's not ready to declare the crisis over. "It's been pretty scary. Hopefully we can still recover."

The Longs' experience illustrates the increasingly fickle nature of winter in the Upper Midwest, where dry, mild weather is making life difficult for businesses that rely on abundant snow, from ski hills to plow trucks to taverns located near snowmobile trails. Even as icy temperatures gripped the region over the past week, snowfall remained spotty ? a feast in some locales, a famine elsewhere.

"This year and last year, there's been what we'd call a snow drought," said Jake Crouch, a climate scientist with NOAA's National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.

Even places with snow are getting less than usual. The Lake Superior shoreline city of Marquette, Mich., is nearly four feet off its usual pace. Total accumulations are below normal by 14 inches in Minnesota's Twin Cities, 4.5 inches in International Falls, Minn., and La Crosse, Wis., and 32 inches in Muskegon, Mich.

Chicago is more than 15 inches below normal and finally got an inch-deep layer Friday morning. It was the city's latest first snowfall of at least an inch since record-keeping began in 1884.

"This is the first time we've had a blade down this year," said Clara Mark, a dispatcher at Chicago Snow Removal Services, which plows parking lots at condominium complexes, strip malls and factories. "It's been rough. Last year was a bust, too. We only plowed three times."

Lack of snow has been fatal for some small businesses. Others are barely hanging on, reducing staff or cutting other expenses. Some resorts have begun offering winter activities that don't require snow, such as wine tasting and ice fishing. Diversifying helps, but there's no substitute for a powdery white landscape to draw tourists northward.

"If there's no snow on the ground, it's hard to get people fired up about winter activities," said Joy Van Drie, executive director of the Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. "Our downhill ski resorts can make snow, but that doesn't help the businesses out in the rural areas that rely on snowmobile traffic ? the restaurants, the gas stations. It's killing them."

But in the eastern Upper Peninsula village of Strongs, tavern and motel owner Rex Hyrns had no complaints. His area is among those where conditions are normal. "Everything's beautiful, the trails are in good shape," he said.

Rhinelander, a small city in northern Wisconsin, is a popular winter destination because of its extensive trail network ? but not this year. Snowmobiles generally need at least 3 inches of packed snow. But with thinner layers in some places and brown spots elsewhere, trails are unusable.

Snowmobile sales and rentals have fallen about 30 percent at Shoeder's RV, Marine and Sport Center, sales manager Ken Brown said. Rebates and incentives offered by manufacturers are of little help.

"On a normal weekend, all 30 sleds are rented two to three weeks in advance," he said. "Right now the inventory is just sitting there."

Sparse snow has forced cancellation of the Langlade County Trailblazer Challenge Sled Dog Race in northeastern Wisconsin the previous two years, a blow to the local tourist industry. This month's scheduled running has been postponed until February ? assuming there will be enough snow.

In Minneapolis-St. Paul, snow removal company owner Kent Gliadon said his bottom line hasn't suffered too badly because he has contracts with apartment complexes and other clients who pay whether it snows or not. But subcontractors who mount plows on their trucks have no such protection. "That's the guy that's getting hurt," he said.

Steve Lashinski said snowmobile sales and rentals are down 50 percent at his shop in Grand Marais, Minn. "It hurts," he said.

But in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Hungry Jack Lodge owner Forrest Parson is breathing easier after getting some good snow last week. He still hasn't rented any snowmobiles but recently booked 10 cabin reservations. "Keep the fingers crossed," he said. "If the weather comes, the business comes with it."

It's not unusual for some sections of the Upper Midwest to get more snow than others. The region is known for "snow belts," particularly in Michigan, which lies in the path of frigid air masses from Canada that barrel across the Great Lakes, suck up moisture and deposit it as snow on the other side. But even some places accustomed to plentiful "lake effect" snow are running short.

"We used to be in the middle of the lake effect. Now we're on the southern cusp," said Van Drie, 40. "When I was a kid we'd have a ton of snow, but it's getting more and more sporadic. We're just not getting the winter."

Mike McGuire, general manager of a family resort in Cadillac, is among those resigned to the growing scarcity. He now offers sledding, hot tubbing and other activities that require less snow ? or none at all.

"Ideally, we'd have enough for snowmobiling, skiing and everything else," he said. "When you don't, you just have to be smarter."

Leading Senate liberal Harkin of Iowa to retire

DES MOINES (Reuters) - Senator Tom Harkin, a veteran Iowa Democrat and one of the most liberal senators, said on Saturday he will not seek re-election in 2014, putting at risk what was considered a safe Democratic seat.

Harkin, 73, who has focused much of his nearly 40-year congressional career on farm policy, education and expanding rights for people with disabilities, is the third senator facing re-election next year who has announced his retirement, following Democrat Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Republican Saxby Chambliss of Georgia.

"It's somebody else's turn. It's time for me to step aside ... . I think that's not only good for our party, it's good for our state and for our nation," Harkin said in an interview with Reuters.

He said he had no health problems but had promised his wife that he would quit before it was too late to enjoy other things in life.

Iowa, site of the country's first presidential nominating contest, is considered a political swing state. Republican Charles Grassley is Iowa's other U.S. senator.

In remarks to the Iowa Democratic Party central committee after his announcement, Harkin said he would stay politically active.

"I'm not quitting today. This is not a time for legacy talks or anything like this," said Harkin, who has served in Congress since 1974.

Several committee members had tears running down their cheeks as he spoke.

President Barack Obama, a fellow Democrat, praised Harkin for his decades of public service.

"During his tenure, he has fought passionately to improve quality of life for Americans with disabilities and their families, to reform our education system and ensure that every American has access to affordable health care," Obama said in a statement.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, in a statement described Harkin as "a passionate progressive, whose deeply held principles have provided a guiding light to Democrats for decades."

Party officials said Harkin's announcement, coming early in the current two-year election cycle, provides ample time to recruit a strong Democratic candidate.

Among Democrats, U.S. Representative Bruce Braley is widely seen as a front-runner. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, a former Iowa governor, and his wife, Christine Vilsack, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress last year, are also viewed as potential candidates.

Among Republicans, U.S. Representatives Tom Latham, a moderate, and Steve King, a conservative, are mentioned as possible candidates, which could produce a divisive Republican primary.

Obama won Iowa in the November election. But the state has a Republican governor, and a divided legislature and congressional delegation.

Harkin's retirement "just reinforces our belief that a grassroots Republican comeback can take place in 2014. Let's have it start in Iowa," Iowa Republican Party Chairman A.J. Spiker said in an email appeal to state Republicans.

The party needs to pick up six seats in the mid-term elections next year to get a majority in the 100-member Senate.

One of the last of the Senate's old-guard liberals, Harkin angrily opposed the White House over the recent fiscal cliff compromise that Vice President Joe Biden negotiated with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

Harkin said the deal that raised taxes only on the very rich helps the wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

First elected to the House of Representatives in 1974 and to the Senate in 1984, Harkin said someone younger needs to take his place.

"I've been there 40 years. I'm 73. By the time I run (for re-election), I'd be 75," he said.

New online dating thread

Well, I'm sitting here drinking wine and chillin' out on a cold night so what the heck?

I won't do the online dating thing. But I live in a metropolitan area and have a lot of options. To me, online dating is just too much work and too much like shopping for a new car or something. I'll bet soon Amazon will have an online dating site. Suprised they don't already!

What I've done is get involved in Meetup.com but not specifically to meet someone..just to go out and have a good time. I figured that if happened to meet someone nice to go out and have a good time with then it would be icing on the cake but my primary objective it just to get out and socialize. I really enjoy the whole getting dressed up and going out scene.

But I DID meet someone with some interesting results and posted a bit about it on the other thread..so here's the conclusion:

But I think it's an example of what NOT to do if you have expressed interest in someone else:

I met this guy right after Christmas at a Meetup.com event. We hit it off quite well and talked until everyone else left. The next night we went to another event at a bar and danced and afterwards he walked me to my car and asked if he could date me. He seemed eager to see me and even asked about the next day.

I said I'd like to date him but had plans the next day but we'd see each other a few days later at New Years and was looking forward to it. I definitely gave him the impression that I was interested. I said "Sure" and we kissed each other goodnight. First time I'd kissed another man or expressed interest in one in 25 years!

A few days later we saw each other at a New Years Party. Had a good time, danced, kissed each other when the ball dropped. He told me he wasn't sure about his schedule with his kids (he has two kids ages, 10 and 12) but would be in touch about us getting together. I said "No problem, you let me know."

Week later I texted him to say "hi". We chatted a bit and he said he wanted to see me. I replied the same thing to him. He told me he'd let me know what his schedule was after he talked to his ex.

A few days later he emails me not to ask me out but to inform me that he will be at the same Meetup event that I signed up for that coming Saturday. I said "Ok, see you there" but am wondering about us actually going out.

The night of this event I get a text from him saying he's sick. I don't answer. It's not like we had an actual date or anything and sometimes the best reaction is no reaction. Ball is in his court now as far as I'm concerned.

Almost 10 days later, on Martin Luther King Day, I got an email from him that morning asking if I want to go to a movie. I was at work and didn't read it until that evening. I replied to his email. He then says he never saw the movie and would I like to go see it this coming Saturday? He said he'd get back to me "By the end of the week about what time".

I said "Sure"..and said that I was looking forward to it. I mentioned that I'd be away all day Friday and he should text or call if he needed an answer right away. No reply from him at all that week.

I came home last night (Friday) at 9:30pm. No email, text or call from him at all. Checked my email this morning at 10 am and nothing from him at all.

Then, TODAY at 11:30 am I get a text from him asking:

"How is your day looking?".

That's it. This is on the DAY of our supposed date, almost at noon.

My reply was:

"Well, originally I thought I had a date with this guy but I never heard from him so I made other plans"

His reply: "Sorry I meant to get to you yesterday"

My reply: "Oh well. BYE"

What a

What's ironic is that I don't much care about dating or meeting someone so I doubt he's going to get someone more laid back than me. Good luck to him out in the dating world cuz he's gonna need it.

On Mars, Dry Ice 'Smoke' Carves Up Sand Dunes

The seasonal thawing of carbon dioxide ice near Mars' north pole carves grooves in the region's sand dunes, three new studies reveal.

The discovery, made using observations from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft (MRO), reinforces that the Red Planet's surface continues to be transformed today, even though Mars' volcanoes have died out and its liquid surface water apparently dried up long ago.?

"It's an amazingly dynamic process," Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz., lead author of one of the studies, said in a statement. "We had this old paradigm that all the action on Mars was billions of years ago. Thanks to the ability to monitor changes with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, one of the new paradigms is that Mars has many active processes today."

MRO photographed dunes in Mars' far northern latitudes using its High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera, or HiRise. The images revealed a number of grooves appearing in the dunes as the northern spring took hold and progressed. [Dry Ice 'Smoke' Moves Mars Sand (Video)]

The phenomenon is driven by the springtime thawing of a surface layer of frozen carbon dioxide, also known as dry ice.

This thawing occurs first on the ice layer's underside, which is in contact with the warming ground, researchers said. The dry ice sublimes from a solid state to a gaseous one, and pressure builds as more and more gas is produced and trapped.?

Eventually, cracks form in the ice and some of the carbon dioxide gas breaks free, forming temporary grooves in the dune as it hisses out.

The escaping gas also carries sand, which forms dark streaks as it spills across the dry ice covering the dune. These dark fans disappear as the seasonal ice evaporates, and Martian winds erase most of the newly formed grooves before the next winter and springtime roll around.

The grooves are smaller versions of the "gullies" MRO has spotted on other, steeper Martian dunes, which were apparently formed in a similar way, researchers said. And similar processes have been observed near the Red Planet's south pole.

"It is a challenge to catch when and how those changes happen, they are so fast," Ganna Portyankina of the University of Bern in Switzerland, lead author of another one of the studies, said in a statement. "That's why only now we start to see the bigger picture that both hemispheres actually tell us similar stories."

The three new studies, which appear in the journal Icarus, were based on observations made by MRO over three Martian years, or about six Earth years. The papers document a variety of seasonal changes on Mars, including the dune grooves and the distribution of water frost, which is blown around by springtime winds.

Security is about preventing loss.? But be careful, as instituting poor security policies can drive away customers and impact your business.?

This is a story of how a financial institution is doing security wrong.?

I have been a customer of a local credit union for nearly 40 years.? It has a few branches, online services, and prides itself on customer service.? My account was open at a very young age and had since moved away but always kept my account active and enjoyed a number of the financial service offerings over the years.?

The problem began in a benign manner.? I recently moved and was changing my mailing address with my various financial, health, and business accounts.? In today's web-centric world, it is pretty easy to accomplish.? In every case except one, I would login to the organization's website with my credentials and provide my new address.? In some cases I would have to provide additional information for verification, but the process was smooth.? They quickly followed up with an email notification or a card in the mail at the previous address as a measure to detect fraudulent submissions.?

Then came my credit union.? Their website requires a User ID, password, and additional validation of challenge-response questions if connecting from an unrecognized or public PC.? It even sports an anti-spoofing feature where an image previously selected by the customer is provided as part of the login.? All wonderful security measures which I applaud.? However, it lacks a friendly user interface to edit profile details.? With no obvious way to change my mailing address online, I called the support number and was informed I needed to write a letter requesting a change of address, provide my account number, and signature, and send it via US mail to their offices for processing.? Although inconvenient, I followed the instructions.?

A few days later I received a voicemail at my home number, which was on record with the credit union, and was informed they received my written request but did believe my signature was authentic and therefore declined my change of address.? What??

I called again and at their request provided my account number, date of birth, and last four of my social security number, home phone, email address, and mobile phone number to validate my identity.? After providing all that was requested in addition to details about my account history which would not be on any recent statements, I explained my issue to the supervisor in charge.? I was informed they could not readily locate my written request but reassured me it should be around somewhere and instructed me to either come into a branch, which is nearly 2 hours away, or photocopy my driver?s license and fax it in.?

No.

I refused to be a part of such "security theater" (as Bruce Schneier would say).? I asked why all this is necessary to change my mailing address?? With the information I provided on the phone or necessary to login online, I can electronically transfer funds to external accounts, receive a personal loan, reset passwords, request checks, and change all other contact data in my profile.? Why the elevated security for a mailing address change??

Here is my favorite part.? The supervisor, in his best authoritarian voice told me it is for my protection, that I probably wouldn't fully understand the security risks, and that is was 'required by law'.? When I told him I am a security professional of 20 years, have consulted banks, and work as a computer security strategist for one of the most prominent companies in technology, his voice went soft.? I explained how the additional controls provided no appreciable value and how the rest of the industry follows more rational practices.? I challenged the representative to identify the regulatory requirement, because none exists which specifies a written and signed request or photocopy of a state identity as necessary to fulfill a change of address request on a basic consumer financial account.?

In the end, we came to the obvious conclusion he was simply following the company's security policy, one created with the best of intents, but lacking both insight and effectiveness to reducing the risk of loss.? It is in fact counter-productive, causing frustration on behalf of the customer and consuming employee resources for no appreciable risk benefit.?? Regardless of the absurdity, as good employees, they are bound to adhere to it.? I don't fault them, rather the management who instituted the ill-advised policy.? We were at an impasse, my stubbornness against their policy.?
