Solar power is not all sunshine; it has a dark sideparticularly in developing countries, according to a new study by a University of Tennessee, Knoxville, engineering professor

Solar power is not all sunshine. It has a dark sideparticularly in developing countries, according to a new study by a University of Tennessee, Knoxville, engineering professor.

A study by Chris Cherry, assistant professor in civil and environmental engineering, found that solar power heavily reliant on lead batteries has the potential to release more than 2.4 million tons of lead pollution in China and India.

Lead poisoning causes numerous adverse health effects, including damage to the central nervous system, the kidneys, the cardiovascular system, and the reproductive system. In children, blood lead concentration is associated with learning impairments, as well as hyperactive and violent behavior.

His study, co-authored with Perry Gottesfeld of Occupational Knowledge International (OK International), appears in the September issue of the journal Energy Policy.

Lead pollution predicted to result from investments in solar power by 2022 is equivalent to one-third of current global lead production. The researchers, who relied on official government plans for deploying solar power to make these projections, also found that the countries have large amounts of lead leak into the environment from mining, smelting, battery manufacturing, and recycling33 percent in China and 22 percent in India. Also, a large percentage of new solar power systems continues to be reliant on lead batteries for energy storage due to the inadequate power grid in these countries.

The study's release comes on the heels of reports of a large number of mass lead poisoning incidents around lead battery recycling and manufacturing plants in China and the announcement that the country recently closed 583 of these facilities.

"Investments in environmental controls in the lead battery industry, along with improvements in battery take-back policies, are needed to complement deployment of solar power in these countries," said Cherry. "Without improvements, it is increasingly clear that the use of lead batteries will contribute to environmental contamination and lead poisoning among workers and children."

The battery industry is the largest consumer of lead, using approximately 80 percent of global lead production. Lead battery manufacturing is growing rapidly in much of the world to meet demand for batteries for solar power and other applications. With the authors' projected emissions, they say this will impact public health and contribute to environmental contamination.

"The solar industry has to step up and take responsibility for ensuring that their lead battery suppliers are operating with adequate controls as long as they are going to be reliant on this technology," said Gottesfeld. "Without major improvements in the manufacturing and recycling lead batteries in these countries, we expect that lead poisoning will increase as the industry grows."

The projections outlined in the study, while based on plans articulated by these two countries, are likely to be repeated throughout much of the developing world, such as in Africa.

Consumer spending rebounds, rose 0.8 pct. in July (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Consumer spending grew in July by 0.8 percent, the largest amount in five months. That followed a decline in June and helped ease fears that the U.S. economy is on the verge of another recession.

Americans bought more cars and spent more last month to cool their homes during a heat wave.

Personal incomes increased 0.3 percent last month, the Commerce Department said. That's slightly higher than the modest 0.2 percent in June, the weakest growth in seven months.

The first look at spending in the second half of the year helped give Wall Street a lift. The Dow Jones industrial average rose more than 155 points in late-morning trading. The rise in spending added to positive reports that Hurricane Irene didn't do as much damage as feared.

Economists said the spending report was a strong sign that the economy rebounded in July after growing at an annual rate of just 0.7 percent in the first half of the year ? the slowest pace since the recession officially ended two years ago.

Consumer spending is important because it accounts for 70 percent of economic activity.

July's spending and income figures "significantly alter the outlook for third-quarter GDP growth," said Paul Dales, a senior U.S. economist for Capital Economics. Dales said growth for the July-September quarter is on track for an annual rate of 2.5 percent, up from his previous estimate of 1.5 percent.

Dales noted that the report measured spending ahead of a sell-off on Wall Street in late July and early August, which may force consumers and business to pull back on spending and investment. The stock market has lost 11 percent of its value since July 21.

But even if the early August data are weak, talk of another recession "would seem strange" when the economy appears to be growing more strongly, Dales said.

The economy added 117,000 net jobs in July, twice the number added in each of the previous two months. Spending on retail goods rose faster last month than in any month since March. U.S. automakers rebounded last month to boost factory production by the most since the Japan crisis.

In July, consumer spending rose at a faster pace than income. That means Americans saved less. The savings rate fell to a four-month low of 5 percent, down from 5.5 percent in June.

The increase in spending was led by a 1.9 percent jump in purchases of durable goods, products such as autos and appliances that are expected to last at least three years. Spending on non-durable goods rose 0.7 percent.

The purchase of services, the biggest spending category, rose 0.7 percent. Much of the increase was because of a jump in electricity use. Many Americans kept their air conditioners running in July to combat a heat wave in most parts of the country.

In a speech Friday, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke proposed no new steps to boost the economy. But he did say the Fed would expand its September meeting to two days to allow a fuller discussion.

Investors hope the Fed will announce another round of Treasury purchases after that meeting. But economists said interest rates are already so low that there is little more the Fed can do to boost the economy.

ISS crew stranded on space station as Russia investigates rocket failure (video)

Russia is investigating the failure of resupply rocket bound for the International Space Station (ISS). NASA said today that the Soyuz investigation will delay the return of the ISS crew to Earth.

Just when NASA needs them most, the Russia space program faces questions about its reliability.

Russian officials announced Monday that they would delay the launch of the next manned mission for the International Space Station (ISS), probably until November. The next launch had been scheduled for Sept. 22.

Russia wants more time to investigate the failure of its Progress 44 supply ship last week. It said it was grounding the entire Soyuz rocket fleet, after the Progress ship's third-stage rocket failed, and the craft burned up on reentry over Siberia Wednesday.

Without a space shuttle, NASA and the ISS are completely dependent on the Russian space program.

Russia has a relatively good record with the Soyuz rockets. NASA notes that as of August 2011, the Russian Space Agency has had 21 launch failures and 724 successes. But the Moscow Times observes that the Progress loss was Russia's second rocket failure in a week and the fourth since December.

The other recent losses have been mostly satellite launches. This was the first loss of a Progress resupply mission.

In Russia, the accident prompted some figure-pointing at the rocket supply chain, and at the government for underfunding its space program.

"There's a general consensus that a specialist in a space industry enterprise shouldn't be getting the salary of an ice cream vendor," Igor Lisov, a Russian space expert, told The Moscow Times. Lisov noted that the average engineer's salary is under 30,000 rubles ? about $1,000 ? per month.

Russia set up a commission Friday to investigate the cause of the Progress failure.

Prior to the Progress 44 crash, Russia has planned to launch four Soyuz rockets: two carrying new crews and two with unmanned resupply ships.

But NASA officials confirmed Monday that resolving the cause of the rocket failure is delaying the planned Sept. 8 return to earth of three of the six crew members on the ISS now. Currently, the crew can stay there until Sept. 19, said NASA ISS program manager Mike Suffredini. If the Soyuz isn't cleared to return them, then next return window is late October.

"I think we'll bring the crew home in September instead of late October," said Suffredini in a press conference. But NASA is prepared to run the space station without a crew, if need be.

He added that his Russian colleagues are "cautiously optimistic" they can at least keep a three-man crew on the ISS.

The Kyiv Post quotes a Russian space official as saying that there will only be two more launches this year. "Now, we are considering the launch of the first spaceship in mid-November and the second one in December," he said. The first will carry three crew members, and the second will be a supply ship.

LSU QB, teammate booked in bar fight and released (AP)

BATON ROUGE, La. ? While Jordan Jefferson's teammates were practicing Friday for a season opener that is now merely a week away, the quarterback was hiring a new lawyer to defend him against felony charges.

Jefferson and teammate Joshua Johns turned themselves in and were released on $5,000 bond each Friday after police obtained arrest warrants on charges of second-degree battery, stemming from their alleged roles in a fight outside Shady's bar in Baton Rouge on Aug. 19. The players have been suspended indefinitely by the school.

"It's certainly a tough time for our team when they see a teammate in peril," coach Les Miles said, describing some players in tears when they first gathered to talk about moving forward without their projected starting quarterback and reserve linebacker. "It's hard on them. I don't believe there were many that believed that was the outcome, and it took some time for them to understand what was going on.

"This is not how I intended to spend my preseason," Miles added. "I wanted to spend it much more on football."

Two months ago, Jefferson was one of the featured counselors at the Manning family's football camp in south Louisiana, talking about maturity, leadership and his hope to leading LSU firmly into the national championship picture. He was already 20-7 as a starter, giving him a chance to challenge Tommy Hodson's LSU career record of 31 victories by a starting quarterback.

Miles said he had seen a change in Jefferson in recent months and sensed that the quarterback was on the brink of his best season yet.

"In many ways (he) had really showed team leadership and skills that he'd not shown up to this point," Miles said. "So this, I'm sure, is devastating to him and his family."

Jefferson had continued practicing for most of this week, hoping to be absolved in a melee that sent four to the hospital. All were treated and released within hours, but police chief Dewayne White has said one of the injured men had fractured vertebrae.

"Today is a sad day for the city of Baton Rouge. Today is a sad day for Louisiana State University, the LSU alumni and the countless fans that follow the Tiger football program," White said. "It is also a sad day for the Baton Rouge police department."

White said the evidence in the case would be forwarded to the East Baton Rouge Parish district attorney for review.

He described the evidence as "numerous interviews of witnesses, including victims and players implicated in the incident ... as well as video evidence of certain individuals, all of whom were present at the scene."

Meanwhile, Jefferson and Johns both hired new attorneys, with Jefferson retaining Lewis Unglesby and Johns enlisting Thomas Damico.

"The case is a zero case or a misdemeanor case at most," said Unglesby, a former special counsel for the Louisiana governor's office whose other past clients have included former San Francisco 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo, Popeye's Fried Chicken founder Al Copeland and several politicians who have faced corruption charges.

"It's been way over-hyped from the legal perspective and overcharged from the legal perspective," Unglesby continued. "The shame of it will be if the accusation by itself works to prohibit (Jefferson's) opportunities to continue on with his athletic and academic career. That would be very unfair when six months from now the smoke clears and everyone realizes he didn't do anything wrong. But he's paid a dear, dear price for just being accused."

A police report says a 19-year-old woman named Victoria Long said she witnessed several LSU players beating one of the alleged victims and saw Jefferson kick that man in the face.

Two witnesses who work at the bar told The Associated Press that the players did not throw the first punch, but added that once the melee began, it was difficult to see who hit whom, and could not verify the extent to which Jefferson and Johns were involved.

White said Jefferson and Johns have cooperated fully in the investigation.

Police also identified offensive lineman Chris Davenport, and receiver Jarvis Landry as people of interest in the fight, but did not comment on their status Friday, and they remained on the team. White said the police would not be making any more public comments about the merits or facts of the case, "for the purposes of protecting the integrity of an ongoing and continuing investigation into to this matter."

Each of the four players were interviewed by investigators Tuesday. On Wednesday, police executed a search warrant of Jefferson's apartment and took 49 pairs of shoes, along with a DNA swab.

Under team orders, LSU players have not discussed the fight publicly since it happened.

With Jefferson suspended, fellow senior Jarrett Lee is slated to make his 10th career start against Oregon, with sophomore Zach Mettenberger, a junior college transfer, next in line, followed by Stephen Rivers, younger brother of San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers.

LSU has numerous other key players returning and was expected to compete for Southeastern Conference and national championships this season.

The team's success now will ride on how the players are able to regroup from a series of setbacks this offseason, one of which occurred Thursday when LSU suspended starting wide receiver Russell Shepard for violating school and NCAA codes that pertain to discussing NCAA inquiries with teammates who are also scheduled to be interviewed on the same matter.

LSU plans to apply for Shepard's reinstatement, but it is unclear how long that will take. The receiver will miss at least the opener and possibly more games.

Shepard had been interviewed about the NCAA's ongoing investigation into the relationship that scouting services provider and purported street agent Willie Lyles has had with a number of college football programs, including both LSU and Oregon.

Earlier this summer, Steve Kragthorpe, who was hired after last season as the Tigers' new offensive coordinator, announced he had Parkinson's disease. He has remained on staff as quarterbacks coach, but relinquished offensive coordinator duties. Miles has since promoted offensive line coach Greg Studrawa to fill that void.

Justin Bieber's Early Christmas Gift: A Holiday Album

'We are going to try and raise alot of money this year for charity!' teen pop star tweets about next project.

Beliebers have more to look forward to this holiday season than just chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Justin Bieber announced Thursday (August 25) on Twitter that he'll be releasing his first Christmas album later this year.

"So it's true...been in the studio doing something special for christmas. we are going to try and raise alot of money this year for charity!" the 17-year-old Canadian pop star tweeted.

This will be Bieber's second studio album, since his first release, My World, was technically an EP. Barring the release of Never Say Never -- The Remixes, which featured the new single "Never Say Never," this will be the first new music Bieber has released in more than a year. He didn't share whether he will be collaborating with any other artists on his holiday record or when fans can expect it to hit stores.

Bieber is no stranger to using his musical talents for charitable causes. In 2010, he took part in "We Are the World 25" alongside Miley Cryus, Kanye West and Lil Wayne. Bieber has supported charities like Give Back Hollywood, Jumpstart and Children's Miracle Network in the past, though he did not specify which charity he would be donating the proceeds of his Christmas album to in his tweet.

The "Baby" crooner isn't the only artist to announce a Christmas album recently. Zooey Deschanel shared the news over Twitter earlier this month that her band She & Him will be releasing their first holiday album -- and third album overall -- later this year. In addition, Bieber's fellow Canadian Michael Bublé has been releasing a series of promos for his holiday album, Christmas, on his official website over the past few weeks.

Which Christmas carol are you hoping Justin covers on his holiday album? Share your suggestions in the comments!

(AP) ? Thousands of Verizon workers on strike pushed the number of people seeking unemployment benefits last week to its highest level in a month.

But excluding the work stoppage, layoffs appear to be stabilizing. That should help ease fears that the economy is on the verge of a recession.

Weekly applications for unemployment benefits rose 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 417,000, the Labor Department said.

But last week's non-seasonally adjusted total included about 8,500 of those employees, the department said. About 12,500 striking workers filed claims two weeks ago.

About 45,000 Verizon workers went on strike Aug. 7. Unions representing the workers ended the strike earlier this week.

Typically, workers who walk off the job aren't eligible for benefits. But states have specific rules governing labor disputes.

Applications were slowly declining before the strike. They are down from an eight-month high of 478,000 in April. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, rose to 407,500, the first increase in eight weeks.

Still, applications typically need to fall below 375,000 to signal sustainable job growth. They haven't been at that level since February.

Joshua Shapiro, an economist at MFR Inc., calculated that without the strike, applications would have dipped to 397,000 two weeks ago and risen to 407,000 last week.

Jill Brown, an economist at Credit Suisse, said those are "decent levels" because they are consistent with a modest increase in hiring.

The number of people receiving benefits under regular state unemployment programs fell to 3.6 million. That's the fewest since Sept. 20, 2008, the week after Lehman Brothers collapsed and the financial crisis intensified.

Some of the unemployed may be finding work. But others are likely exhausting the 26 weeks of benefits provided in most states. There are roughly 3.5 million additional people receiving extended benefits, paid for by the federal government, under emergency programs enacted by Congress.

All told, about 7.3 million unemployed people received unemployment benefits in the week ending Aug. 6, the latest data available.

The economy is barely growing two years after the recession officially ended. The government reported last month that it grew at an annual rate of only 0.8 percent in the first half of the year and only 1.3 percent in the April-June quarter.

The government will give its second estimate on second-quarter growth Friday. Economists forecast it will be closer to 1.1 percent, according to a survey by FactSet.

Fear that the U.S. may be entering another recession has rattled investors. The Dow Jones industrial average has recovered some losses this week, but is still about 11 percent below its July 21 close.

Some economic data suggest the economy is improving. A big jump in demand for autos and airplanes pushed up orders for long-lasting manufactured goods in July, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. Consumers spent more on retail goods last month than in any month since March. And factory output rose in July by the most since Japan's March 11 earthquake, a sign that supply chain disruptions caused by the disaster are fading.

Employers added 117,000 net jobs in July, roughly double the totals from each of the previous two months.

Still, twice as many new jobs are needed to significantly reduce the unemployment rate, which was 9.1 percent last month.

The Federal Reserve this month said that it expects weak growth for the next two years. As a result, it said that it plans to keep its short-term interest rate near zero until at least mid-2013.

Stocks have rallied this week on hopes that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will announce another round of bond purchases on Friday in a highly anticipated speech in Jackson Hole, Wyo. The bond purchases, known as quantitative easing, are designed to keep interest rates low and boost stock prices. But economists think that Bernanke will likely take minor steps, if any.

Reading Consulting and Business Books | Business Consulting Buzz

The day I picked up my first book my life changed for the better.

Growing up my whole life was about sports. I played baseball, soccer, rugby, track and field and a bit of basketball. Books? No thank you.

They were my enemy. I?d do whatever I could to get out of reading books in school.

Early Days
Anytime we were assigned a book to read, I?d dash off to the library and find a Coles Notes or some other book that summarized what I was supposed to read.

And that was being ambitious. I?d often rely on friends to ?tell? me what the book was all about.

The first books I really dug into were fiction. The Godfather, Shogun, Siddartha, The Alchemist?and others like that.

The First Chapter
But the day I picked up my first non-fiction business book something snapped. In a matter of a few hours or days I could soak up immense knowledge from others.

Where else can you pay $20-$50 or so and learn in a few days what it has taken the author years to learn? Where else can you spend less than $100 or so to access the findings from research and tests that cost hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars?

I can?t think of any truly successful entrepreneur that I?ve met that is not a book lover and a consumer of vast amounts of information.

Sharpen Your Sword
Information becomes your sword in the battle of business. The more you read and learn the sharper your sword gets and the more moves you pick up?making you stronger and putting you farther along the path in your journey to achieving complete success.

How often should you read?

Everyone is different.

We all have different goals, situations and schedules.

What I can tell you is that I have a busy schedule. Every day is packed full. But I still make time to read each day. Some days for an hour, some days less. And some days I can?t squeeze in the time.

But every time I read, I learn. I become more motivated, inspired and ready to take on the next day and make my businesses more successful.

How has reading impacted your life?
