The South Bay had quite the haul Monday as the CIF-Southern Section announced its All-CIF football selections.
The South Bay earned 31 picks, including six major award winners. It seemed appropriate, considering the South Bay put four teams in section finals.
Adoree' Jackson of Serra, the 2012 Daily Breeze Player of the Year, earned the Western Division's Defensive Player of the Year award, dazzling with his big-play ability in leading the Cavaliers to the Western Division crown. Serra coach Scott Altenberg also earned the division's Coach of the Year award.
The South Bay swept the three Northern Division awards after Bay League rivals Palos Verdes and West Torrance met in the final. Palos Verdes running back Matt Lopes was the Offensive Player of the Year, West defensive lineman Mat Boesen earned Defensive Player of the Year honors and Palos Verdes coach Guy Gardner earned Coach of the Year honors.
North Torrance quarterback Jorge Hernandez earned the Northwest Division's Offensive Player of the Year honors after sparking the Saxons to the division final.
Serra and Palos Verdes each tied for the most selections with eight each.
Serra running back Malik Roberson and quarterback Jalen Greene earned All-CIF honors on offense in the Western Division. The quartet of linebacker Dwight Williams, linebacker Ardis Perez, defensive lineman Inoke Raikadroka and defensive lineman Nick Usher made it on defense for Serra, which
went on to win the CIF State Division II Bowl.CIF champion Palos Verdes also were honored in the Northern Division. Lineman Andrew Bucklin, receiver Dean Alessi and kicker Michael Tulchin were chosen on offense. Defensive lineman Mason Manu, linebacker Ben Hopkins and defensive back Adam Hahn were defensive selections.
West, which made an improbable playoff run after a fourth-place Bay League finish, boasted running back Barry Thomas on offense and linemen Ray Lima and Josh Allen on defense in the Northern Division.
Mira Costa also had a pair of All-CIF selections in the Northern Division with offensive lineman Cory Sanicky and all-purpose player Raphael Lawson-Gayle on defense.
North had five total All-CIF picks in the Northwest Division. In addition to Hernandez, his talented receivers, Michael Jurado and Devante Jenkins, and lineman Luis Yepez were offensive selections. Lineman Junior Juarez was a defensive pick.
El Segundo had three All-CIF picks in the Northwest Division, all on defense: linebacker Austin Brasher, lineman Austin Kurke and defensive back Jamie Stewart.
Bishop Montgomery offensive lineman Andrew Reimer also made All-CIF in the Northwest Division.
Ferron picks Arizona
Redondo High distance running star Kayla Ferron has made it official. She is headed to the University of Arizona.
Ferron, the Bay League cross country champion who delivered stellar runs at the CIF, state and regional races, said she chose Arizona over UCLA and Iowa State.
Ferron had grown up wanting to go to UCLA but said she was sold on Arizona after her recruiting trips.
"I'm really, really excited," Ferron said. "It was a tough decision, but when it came down to it I loved the team atmosphere and coaches at Arizona. It's not too far away from home, but far enough."
Cavalier Classic
The Cavalier Classic returns for a second season at Serra this Saturday with an eight-game boys basketball showcase.
The most notable games include Serra against Fresno Central at 5 p.m., Lawndale taking on La Verne Lutheran at 8 p.m. and Renaissance Prep vs. Rolling Hills Prep at 12:30 p.m.
Other matchups include: Salesian and Washington Prep at 11 a.m., Providence vs. Locke at 2 p.m., Price vs. Perris at 3:30 p.m. and Cathedral vs. St.Anthony at 6:30 p.m.
Narbonne Extravaganza
The Narbonne Extravaganza returns this Saturday and features a full day of girls basketball.
The one-day showcase features six games, including quality matchups such as Bell-Jeff taking on Narbonne at 3:30p.m. and Serra taking on Ridgeview at 6:30 p.m.
The day kicks off with a Rolling Hills Prep-Culver City matchup at 11 a.m., followed by Lawndale-Torres at 12:30 p.m. and a colossal St. Anthony-Centennial/Corona matchup at 2.

Big start for PV boys
With quality teams across the board, the Bay League boys soccer race looked wide open before last week. Then defending champion Palos Verdes showed it might be a cut above and all of the other quality teams might be battling it out for second place.
Palos Verdes won a tough game on the road against a skilled Leuzinger team 2-1, then came home and beat a good West Torrance club 2-0. After just two games Palos Verdes is the only unbeaten team in the Bay League.
Palos Verdes coach Derek Larkins was impressed with Leuzinger and West and was ecstatic to get out of the week with two wins.
"Obviously Leuzinger is a very skilled team, but I thought West at times was more of a threat than Leuzinger because they have that physical dimension," Larkins said.
Palos Verdes tries to keep it rolling this week, when it hosts Peninsula today at 3 p.m. and plays at Redondo on Friday. West plays at Redondo and Leuzinger plays at Mira Costa in 3 p.m. games today. On Friday Leuzinger is at West and Mira Costa is at Peninsula.
PV girls make own statement
The unheralded West Torrance girls soccer team went into its game last Friday at home against Palos Verdes fired up and feeling great after making a statement by beating Mira Costa to open the Bay League.
But Palos Verdes upended West, edging the Warriors in overtime 1-0. Lilly Califano scored on a header off a corner kick from Jess Frost in the 89th minute.
Palos Verdes (6-3-5, 2-0) felt fortunate to get the win.
"I don't want to say lucky, but it could have gone either way," Palos Verdes coach Sean Lockhart said. "It was a nail-biter."
So just like West made a statement by beating a strong Mira Costa team, Palos Verdes showed it cannot be overlooked in what looks like an intriguing Bay League title race.
"It was good for us to get a win against a quality team in league and hopefully keep it going into our next game at Peninsula," Lockhart said.
Serra baseball already looking impressive
The Serra baseball team has been turning heads in winter league games, and could be primed for a huge season with highly-touted draft prospect Dominic Smith leading the way.
Serra recently defeated Lakewood and Granada Hills by lopsided scores.
Serra coach Wilmer Aaron said opposing coaches have a lot of good things to say about his squad.
"The Granada Hills coach said we were the best team he has played and that we could beat Harvard-Westlake and Chatsworth," Aaron said.
