Samsung NP300E5A-A01UB

The Samsung NP300E5A-A01UB ($599.99 list at Best Buy) offers much more than what its cellar price would lead you to think. A big 15.6-inch widescreen, 640GB hard drive, and an Intel Core i3 processor are a solid trio, as many of its competitors are selling similar offerings for more. Design, however, could use some flair, as its black-frame prevents the naked eye from recognizing that it's partially made from brushed aluminum. For this reason and others, the Lenovo IdeaPad V570-1066AJU or Asus U56E-BBL5 ($649.99 list, 4 stars) will give you more bang for the buck.

Design
From a distance, the NP300E5A-A01UB looks more like a boardroom laptop than a family one. It sports a brushed aluminum lid like the Asus U5E-BBL5 and Lenovo IdeaPad V570-1066AJU, but the decorative aspects are hardly noticeable because the entire frame is painted black. The lid isn't as solid as that of the Lenovo V570-1066AJU, so it could easily be mistaken for plastic dressed up to look like metal. The Gateway NV55S05u ($580 list, 4 stars), on the other hand, is obviously made from plastic, although its white colors and decorations are flashier. Despite its conservative looks, the NP300E5A-A01UB is one of the lightest 15-inch laptops, tipping the scales at 4.9 pounds. It's at least a half a pound lighter than the 5.4-pound Lenovo V570-1066AJU, 5.5-pound Asus U56E-BBL5, and 5.6-pound Gateway NV55S05u.

A 15.6-inch widescreen (1,366-by-768 resolution) means that text and content can be displayed bigger and brighter, so that a child or an elderly person won't have to squint at it. It's large enough that you can tile two applications side by side and keep scrolling to a minimum. It has a full size chiclet-style keyboard, the kind you can actually get work done with. The adjacent numeric keypad, which is also available with the Asus U56E-BBL5 and Lenovo V570-1066AJU, facilitates number crunching. The mechanics of the mouse buttons vary across Samsung laptops?some are more resistant than others. The ones on the NP300E5A-A01UB make these annoying clicking noises, but they weren't overly resistant.

Features
The optical drive reads and burns single and dual layer DVDs. An HDMI port, which is now a standard feature in cheap laptops, is also present. Three USB ports are as many as you would get on any 15-inch laptop and can take on all of your external peripherals. An Ethernet port and 802.11n Wi-Fi take care of your wired and wireless Internet needs, respectively. There's plenty of room in the 640GB, 5,400rpm hard drive to hold all your digital memories, although you can find bigger ones can be had in other laptops, like the Asus U56E-BBL5 (750GB) and Lenovo V570-1066AJU (750GB). The NP300E5A-A01UB does feature Intel's Wireless Display 2 (WiDi 2.0) technology, which is essentially a wireless version of HDMI and can stream 1080p video and protected content. You will need to buy the optional Netgear HD Push2TV receiver (a $99 purchase), though.

Best Buy also has an extended warranty program, which offers customers an extra year of protection beyond the one-year warranty of most system manufacturers. There are two plans in this extended warranty program. The standard plan ($119.99) covers the system against normal wear and tear, power surge damage, and includes a "No Lemon" guarantee in which Best Buy will simply replace the computer if it requires more than 4 repairs during the coverage period. Best Buy's advanced plan ($219.99) offers all this, and also covers the system against accidental damage from drops and spills. Other special offers can be found online or in stores, like discounts on printers, software, and tech support plans which are available with any new consumer PC purchased through Best Buy.

Performance
Samsung NP300E5A-A01UBThe NP300E5A-A01UB's 2.2GHz Intel Core i3-2330M CPU is paired with 4GB of memory. Its Cinebench R11.5 (2.14) and Handbrake (2 minutes 24 seconds) scores soared past that of the Gateway NV55S05u (1.88 on Cinebench; 3:33 on Handbrake), which uses an AMD A8 "Llano" chip. It scored 1,866 on PCMark 7 and 5:35 on Photoshot CS5, which was behind that of the Core i5-equipped Asus U56E-BBL5 (1,920 on PCMark 7; 4:13 on CS5) and Lenovo V570-1066AJU (2,275 on PCMark 7; 4:01 on CS5), though.

High-end gaming is not the NP300E5A-A01UB's strength, given its integrated Intel graphics. The Gateway NV55S05u, with its AMD graphics, is a better alternative for gaming. Where it trails in gaming, it gains back handsomely in battery performance. The NP300E5A performed admirably in MobileMark 2007, scoring 6 hours, 37 minutes. It outlasted the Gateway NV55S05u (4:54) and fell somewhere in between the Lenovo V570-1066AJU (5:59) and Asus U56E-BBL5 (7:34).

The Samsung NP300E5A-A01UB is a very conservative-looking budget laptop, despite using brushed aluminum on its chassis. But inside, its parts and features exceed what you'd find in other sub-$600 desktop replacements. It has strong performance, long battery life for its category, and cutting-edge features like WiDi 2.0 and eSATA. However, if there's room in the budget for another $50-$80, I'd take performance to the next level by going with the Editors' Choice Lenovo IdeaPad V570-1066AJU.
