Mouth Guard: A Should-Wear For Any Player Engaging In ...

Mouth guards are essential part of any sports enthusiasts? life. Players of football, hockey, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, volleyball and other contact sports are at all times exposed to high risk of teeth injuries which may be avoided through their usage. The type of mouth guard you chose to wear could impact the level of protection you will receive when involved in an accident related to contact sports play.

Mouth guards are safety gears that can be worn either on the upper or lower teeth. Nonetheless, they may also be worn covering all of one?s teeth. They are also referred to as mouth protectors, mouth pieces, or gum shields and have three primary functions: to cushion the damage that may result from blows and physical contact, to limit the risk of soft tissue damage by acting as a barrier between teeth/braces and the cheeks and between the lips and tongue, and to prevent damage to teeth due to sleep disorders. That is, these gears are especially designed to provide protection against injuries to our teeth.

Most mouth guards are custom-made, though these gears can also be purchased in pharmacies and sporting goods stores. For custom-made, the materials often used in the manufacture of one are hard plastic and soft vinyl. From these materials, a dentist or an orthodontist will mold the mouth guard based from the impression of the user?s teeth. On the other hand, those that are bought from store come in varying sizes such as small, medium, large, and even a free size that fits all. They are the type which are often soft and are described as ?boil and bite? items that are only for temporary use. They also come with a manual on how to use them.

A perfectly fitted mouth guard is very important in order to provide the utmost protection to your teeth. It allows normal speaking and does not limit the breathing capabilities of the user. It should also stay in place during the action of the game even when the player does excessive movements. Thirdly, a well fitted mouth guard provides a high degree of comfort and should not hinder the player?s performance. Ideal mouth guards are also durable and easy to clean and at the same time be resilient, tear resistant, odorless and tasteless.

The use of mouth guards is not limited to a certain group of people. That is, individuals whose profession poses them with high risks of teeth injuries should always carry one. Aimed at preventing or reducing the risks of mouth related injuries such as chipped or broken teeth, nerve damage to a tooth, or tooth loss, these gears are highly recommended for athletes who are into contact sports such as football, ice hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and field hockey.

Wearing a mouth guard is like wearing another piece of protective gear. They can prevent injury, treat pain, and affect the general quality of your life.
