West Tallaght Health Fair 2012 - Health Service Executive

Raising awareness about health issues, related service provision and the social aspects of health is key to promoting good standards of health within a community.

Following on from the success of last year?s health fairs, the local Revitalizing Areas by Planning, Investment & Development (RAPID) Health Strategy group, which is a collaboration of statutory and community agencies, is facilitating a Tallaght-wide health fair. It will take place in the Tallaght Leisure Centre, 10am to 7pm on Wednesday, September 19

The fair aims to promote a positive attitude and to generate an awareness of the range of factors which influence health and wellbeing?

Various factors can affect an individual?s physical and mental health, for example levels of fitness, diet, financial stress, substance dependency, housing/environmental issues, education, employment opportunities as well as access to various health and social services.

A selection of HSE community services? staff will be on hand to meet and greet the public and offer advice and information.

To date, we have over 50 agencies both within the Tallaght community and the wider national community who intend to be involved on the day through providing information stands and/or other services.

These services range from voluntary and statutory health related services such as the Marie Keating Foundation, the Asthma Society, AMNCH, HSE Smoking Cessation, Bri Ireland, Move 4 Parkinson?s, local addiction services and the Carers? Association.

Services and agencies which work in areas that have an indirect impact on health such as the National Disability Advocacy Service, MABS, the SDCC Sports Partnership Initiative, local counseling services, local Men?s Groups, Foroige and NALA literacy will also be present. Other agencies who cannot have a presence on the day intend to have information provided such as Barnardos, Aware and AMEN.

In addition to these health screening opportunities for blood pressure, sugar levels, Body Mass Index (BMI) and carbon monoxide testing will be available. A taste of complementary therapies ranging from Reiki and Indian Head Massage to Auricular Ear Acupuncture will also be available.

Julie Cruickshank, TDO/Social Inclusion Manager with the HSE sees the fair as a positive step in working with the local community. ?Engagement with the community is a key part of the Primary Care strategy and all evidence indicates that individuals and communities who are actively involved in their own health and health services have better outcomes in terms of health status.?

The initiative is funded by the HSE Health Promotion Unit in Dublin South West and has been organised via a collaboration between the HSE West Tallaght Primary Care Teams, Fettercarin Community Health Project and the West Tallaght Rapid Health Strategy Group. ?
