You can have your Pi and eat it too

Even geeks have their day. ?March 14 (3.14) is Pi Day, a celebration of the most famous irrational number, pi, a mathematical constant that allows you to calculate the area inside a circle. ?March 14 is also Albert Einstein's birthday!

The ancient Greeks were the first to study pi, and the Greek letter ? has been adopted for the number.

Pi is importance in many scientific calculations. It is used throughout engineering, science and medicine and is studied for its own sake in number theory.? Schools use pi to spark interest in mathematics and science.

Pi's?value cannot be expressed exactly as a fraction having integers in both the numerator and denominator. As a result its decimal representation never ends and never repeats. Chao Lu, of China, set the world record in 2005 for memorizing 67,890 digits of pi.

The U.S. House of Representatives formally declared March 14 National Pi Day in 2009, and it's been celebrated ever since in most irrational ways.

How will you celebrate Pi Day? ?Here are some suggestions:

1. Tune in to San Francisco's Exploratorium at 1 p.m. PT for a webcast of the day's celebrations.

2. Send a pi e-card.

3. Bakeries are offering deals, so buy a pie, or a cake.
