A small sliver of the voters will determine the outcome of a tight presidential race. Yahoo! News asked a handful of undecided voters to keep a running diary: What news stories and events are coloring their choices?
I am 44 and live near Roanoke, Va., in the heart of one of the swing states. I am still undecided whom I will vote for in November, but I'm starting to warm up to the Romney/Ryan ticket. Ron Paul was on Jay Leno's show Tuesday night with a "big announcement." Beforehand, all over the Internet, there were rumors he might announce a third-party candidacy. He told Leno he'd keep "plugging along" until November.
Many independents and Libertarian-leaning undecided voters are hoping Paul will announce a third-party run for president, either as a write-in candidate or formally joining the Libertarian candidacy of Gary Johnson.
Many of the speakers during the GOP convention, including Mitt Romney himself, have begun to convince me that Romney isn't out of the touch with middle-class voters like me just because he is wealthy. Certain actions taken by the party leadership during the GOP convention might cause voters like me to either vote for President Obama again, or even stay home and not vote at all.
According to reports on Reality Check and other online sources, the RNC changed their delegate selection rules so that they can remove delegates from the top down and effectively end grassroots challenges to secure the nomination within the Republican Party. Since some of my issues with voting for Obama again concern his abuses of power through his use of executive orders, what promise do I or other voters have that Romney would be any different given what happened with the delegate selection rules during the GOP convention?
I still look forward to the DNC, as well as the presidential debates, to help me in making my decision. A surprise announcement of a third-party run by Ron Paul would have definitely been a game-changer in my decision-making process.
