The Star Performance Venue is located in the Vista Xchange precinct of One-North, Singapore. The 54,000m2 development comprises of cultural, civic & retail spaces and when complete will provide a premier entertainment, lifestyle and retail experience for not only One-North but also the wider Singapore community.
The structure responds to the challenging site topography as the zone spirals inwards addressing the major entry points that ultimately culminate in an open amphitheatre. Instead of a singular expression, the complex celebrates the rich and varying activities inside whilst maintaining functionality. The design is driven by the desire to blur the boundaries between retail and cultural zones, public and private, and indoor and outdoor spaces with flowing spatial transitions that encourage discovery and deliver a dynamic energy to the visitors.
Titanium cladding and faceted glass fissures dissolve big masses, and create a dynamic composition of positive and negative spaces, as well as a sense of balance. The south elevation is completely open and its facilities and clearly visible from the exterior. The building is an organic object open to public discovery. One can crawl under, move through, transverse around and climb onto the complex through a series of ramps, escalators, terraces and public gardens. All circulation, movement and internal forms are soft and sinuous as if the civic activities have shaped the inside.
The design for the 24,000m2 retail space features a 40 meter high grand foyer, which creates a visual and spatial connection between the different zones. It also serves as a canopy under which the public can experience outdoor entertainment and al-fresco dining while being protected from the elements.
The focus of the 30,000m2 cultural zone is a 5000 plus seat auditorium, which will be the largest venue of its kind in Singapore. It is capable of staging musicals, concerts and other large scale visual events. The venue is supported by administration, artists and technicians, as well as, function rooms, foyers, concession and circulation spaces. This soft transition occurs vertically from the most public of the open retail into the perceptual privacy of the theatre.
The design also aims to be highly sustainable. The retail, civic square, outdoor theatre and banquet and meeting room facilities are all open air under the ?Grand Foyer?, minimizing the need for air-conditioning. The structure encourages air circulation through the space and creates a cool, shaded environment that can be enjoyed year round. Carefully places openings allow the shaded Northern face to cool the heated surfaces of the Southern elevation. Air movement can also be mechanically managed if necessary. Glazing on the southern face is minimized and protected by shades. The majority of the glass in theatre?s main lobby faces East but it is protected from the late morning sun by an external bridge acting as a large sun shade. On top of the facility is a large roof-top garden shaded by trees and looks over a reflecting pool. Furthermore, gardens are deliberately placed throughout the facility to once again soften the distinction of inside and outside spaces and present the complex as an eco-friendly building.
