ONE MAGIC BULLET THAT TURNS REGULAR SUBSCRIBERS INTO ADDICTED RAVING FANS
Today's article is going to explore an incredibly simple, yet very effective strategy for turning your bored email subscribers into loyal raving fans.
In today's over stimulated society businesses are faced with two major challenges:
1. How do we maintain our prospect's & customer's attention?
2. How do we stand head and shoulders above the competition? (And keep customers loyal)
With the method of writing we are about to learn we will discover exactly how to overcome these two hurdles simultaneously; we will skyrocket reader engagement while also standing head and shoulders above the competition.
So how will we accomplish this?
We will accomplish this by using one magic bullet: Stories.
Now before we get into the specifics of how to write stories or why stories create high levels of reader engagement, its first important to understand the fundamentals of what makes an online business successful.
As website owners we all know that our email list is the backbone of our business. The ability to engage our audience and build a close relationship with them is a vital component to our success.
When writing our email auto-responder sequence the main component we must always strive for is 'reader engagement'. The more attention our readers pay to each message we send them, the more effectively we can ethically persuade and influence them to buy from us.
In today's online world, attention often translates into money. The more attention we have on our business the more money we can earn.
For example: Instagram, a social picture sharing app, was just purchased by Facebook for $1 Billion Dollars. One of the major factors that determined the selling price of Instagram was the fact that they have over 27 Million ACTIVE users. Although most of us are not operating at such a large scale, Instagram serves as a great example on how attention very often equates to money for online businesses.
The rest of this article is going to describe how to take our reader's engagement through the roof and create lasting attention that leads to profits. We will learn how to write emails that will stand out from all the other messages in the prospect's inbox. When we structure our emails in story form our emails will get opened and read virtually every time.
So the next question that arises is: How do we simultaneously grab reader's attention and stand out from the crowd?
The answer again is: Stories
Stories naturally draw people in. The human brain is programmed to naturally pay attention to stories. We also learn more easily through stories since we are relaxed and our defenses are down. The human brain has a natural desire to want to see a story come to completion. That is why we get so addicted to drama shows such as "Lost" or "24". We don't know why, but whenever we watch those TV dramas we feel a physical urge to know what happens next!
So how do we apply this concept to email?
Well, what if we turned all our emails into one giant continuous story!
Each email represents a single episode, within a larger story. This means that in order for someone to find out what happens, or learn more information, they have to stay tuned for the upcoming email messages. This creates anticipation and suspense in the reader; it also makes the emails a lot more exciting and engaging.
The basic idea is that we will build a series of 10 - 30 email "episodes" that eventually tell a complete story; as long as the story is unfolding, the readers will stay engaged and interested.
When we write out our individual email episodes it is important to always include 2 to 3 "open loops" within each message.
What is an open loop?
An open loop is simply an incomplete piece of information.
An example of an "open loop": In the TV series 24, Jack Bauer has just been shot by a secret spy, and now we want to know if he is going to die or not! At that very moment of suspense the episode ends, and we have to wait till next week to see what happens; this is a classic example of an open loop. Open loops create interest, tension and anticipation; we will automatically want to watch the next episode because our brain craves completion.
So how do we do this in our email messages?
It's very simple. This method of "open loop story telling" will be the template we use for writing all our email messages. In each email we will teach the reader something while always leaving them hungry for more. How do we do this? By using open loops.
I have already created an open loop within this article to demonstrate it to you. If you look back to the top of this article, I promised to explain how to stand head and shoulders above the competition but I did not explain how to do it until later in the article. This open loop draws you into reading the whole article because you want to know the answer. We can simply use the same method I used here, except we split it up into separate email messages.
The way we keep readers engaged is we close 2 loops in every email but we also open two or three new loops. This way people will get the instant gratification when they open new emails, but at the same time they will always be looking forward to new information that we promised to give them in the upcoming messages.
An example of something we could write: "In this email we are going to discover the 5 tricks to SEO and in the next email I will share one amazing tip that boosted me up to page one of Google within only 24 hours."
We are giving our readers valuable information today, and are telling them that the next email will also contain something of value; with this future promise they will virtually always tune in to read your next message.
So the general guideline is to create 2 or 3 open loops per email and close previous loops that we opened in our preceding message; this gives the reader instant gratification along with consistent anticipation and suspense.
Anticipation amplifies perceived value. When we mix anticipation with a bit of scarcity, our sales can shoot through the roof!
The next component of story telling is making our email stories fun and personal; this creates a relationship of trust. The more the reader feels as though they know us, the more open they will be to buy from us.
Its important to note that your story must also be purposeful, meaning it is leading to a very specific conclusion. In our story we show the reader how our product/service solved the problem we had. The story must be leading the reader to the realization that the only next logical step is to buy our product or service if she wants her problem solved as well.
By the time we have presented the product or service, as part of a story, it will be so ?under-the-radar" that people will think: "Of course I'm going to buy this product/service from you and not your competitor; it's the only logical choice."
The reader feels as though they have gone through the story with us, so they feel with us, trust us and believe we're just like them.
So now we have created interest, anticipation, loyalty and immediately our emails are completely different from all the other gurus out there! Instead of boring information, we are delivering exciting stories that readers can't wait to read.
People these days want to be entertained and given a break from reality. When we can provide entertainment mixed with education and value, we have a winning formula that can't lose.
While your email subscribers are skipping over all their other emails, they will virtually always read yours since it's a story they want to get completion, solutions and entertainment from.
By writing your email auto-responder messages in story format, you can keep people fully engaged; and that attention very often leads to money.
Get ready to stand well above the competition and watch as your sales conversions steadily escalate from your email subscriber list. While other business owners are sending their email leads boring dry information, you will be developing a rich quality relationship of trust and loyalty with your followers.
This is how to turn bored subscribers into addicted raving fans.
